i think more people need to talk about how royally fucked over arts programs get in schools

i have only been in high school 2 years. they have fucked over the arts department a million times. they fucked up BIG TIME. TWICE. IN ONE FUCKING SUMMER.

its frustrating because it feels like this is a problem only band/theatre/chorus kids and their parents see and care about

we need more physically disabled and disfigured protagonists...like I'm capable of liking disabled and disfigured villains and recognizing that their physical traits have nothing to do with their behavior, at least not in the ways those things are associated, but the subtext is still there and it's very ableist and very old. and yet it continues to exist everywhere.

maybe my opinion doesn't matter bc I'm only a woman sometimes but every time I see the word spelled womxn or womyn i die inside a little. I recognize that trans inclusive people also use it now but it looks stupid and it makes my transphobia alarms go off and I just hate it. Please stop.

you need to be able to accept be that some trans men used to identify as lesbians or queer women and may still have a connection to that experience and that community. you need to be able to accept they may have been called homophobic and misogynistic slurs and that they have a right to talk about and process that. that does not equate to intruding on women's spaces.

you've got to be able to accept that some people will struggle to figure out whether they're gay or bi/poly/pan. that some will have figured it out but still feel very close to the other community. that we will sometimes have words and experiences in common and that does not equate to stealing.

nonbinary people will often call themselves gay and queer just by virtue of being nb! they'll call any attraction involving them gay or queer bc it kind of is! they might have heard the same slurs and rhetoric growing up as you and say 'oh, me too!' when you think you're talking about an exclusive experience.

ace and aro people will often feel the same isolation as anyone else here. they'll feel compelled to hide or fix themselves just like I did when I knew I was bi. they might feel closer to their lesbian and gay and pan and trans friends than any of their cis straight friends because they don't look at them like they're weird or ask them uncomfortable questions. they're more like us than not like us.

point being... we're a community for a reason. we have things in common. stop drawing more lines between us.

Okay, here's what I think. If you, individually, as a nonbinary person, feel unfulfilled or offended by SU, or SPOP, or any other 'imperfect' portrayal of nb characters, that's chill. That absolutely makes sense and I don't blame you. No representation is gonna please everyone and there are downsides to characters like the Gems and Double Trouble being the nonbinary rep.

But I think trying to say that these shows are objectively bad representation when:

- they're hugely important to lots of nonbinary people

- they're written by nonbinary showrunners

- they're written with lots of love and heart

- there are other, human, background nb characters that just get to exist within the narrative

Then I'm gonna be mad. That's not fair to the creators or the fans. The beginning and end of what qualifies as good representation is NOT your opinion.

And if even out nonbinary creators can't make nb characters without getting criticized then I don't want to listen to any of this discussion.
