The US government has been interested in the occult ( supernatural, mystical, or magical powers, not satanism) for decades. They’ve searched the globe for people with mystical powers.
The US government intelligence agencies have been in a mystical/supernatural race with other governments. For example the government's research in remote viewing through their programs such as; SCANATE, Stargate, Project Center Lane, Grill flame, Sunstreak, etc.
Three tactics have been used:-
CRV - Co-ordinated remote viewing ‘Say what you Saw’ at specific geographic co-ordinates
WRV - Written remote viewing Channeling and automatic writing introduced in 1988

To answer your question, the government is looking for individuals with heightened psychic/astral projection/mystic abilities not for their spiritual beliefs.
It’s the continued ‘psychic warfare’ plans. The governments are searching for individuals who can access the Akashic Records. The Akashic Records are believed to be the repository of every thought, word, and deed of every living being, good, bad, and awful, in all times; past, present, future.
