ooh okay good question. i think there are probably a few decent possibilities here, but i would, i think, pick either tangled or the little mermaid. tangled appeals to me as an option purely because i think the premise is great -- could absolutely see near blackmailing / manipulating mello into a favor [like escorting him to go somewhere he wants to] :3 because of his nature. second choice would be the little mermaid, because i love it & near's creaturey-ness is well-suited to mermaid status (@gh-st-b-y-logbook has great thoughts on possibilities for a mermaid AU OwO)

(4) Who initiates affection? Why does the other not initiate affection as much?

At first, Mello initiates sex the most. I think this is really the only way he feels comfortable initiating affection. It's easier to express and solicit lust than it is to express and solicit a nonsexual desire for physical closeness. The main reason I don't see Near initiating as much at first is that I imagine in the very early stages of their relationship, he doesn't feel quite secure enough to do so. Mello has historically harbored a lot of resentment and distaste for him, at least outwardly, and I think Near would be hesitant to push for more. He would take what's given.

Once Near is secure enough in their relationship to do so, he is the one to initiate affection and sex most of the time. I think this works really well for them because Mello likes to feel wanted, and Near likes knowing that Mello is defenseless against his "charms" (*charms that only Mello is capable of recognizing)

Rereading The Chain (as one does) and just remembered that you drew L holding a baby in one of Light's Inner Monologue pages, and while Light imagines L holding babies very gently, all I could think of was this

But, yeah, that's frickin' hilarious~. Just L being like, "Look what I found!" while holding a child like a huge fish he just caught (he has very strong fingers in my drawing lol). Thank you for gifting me with such an image! XD

On a related note, I just read this fanfic the other day about L and Light getting together and eventually raising a kid together. It's not all that happens, but it's absolutely touching and now has a special place in my heart~.

I am old enough to drink lol. but i find being very generous with the block button is a much better cure for fandom (and not fandom since purity culture is absolutely an issue irl, fandom imitates life etc) nonsense than drugs
