I HAVDE THOUGHTS ABOUT FERN.... IM SO GLAD THEYRE ALIVE AND TRANSITIONED SO BEAUTIFULLY.... since we have no confirmed pronouns I'll stick to they/she,..., transfem enby is the vibe I'm getting but I could see it being any prns as well.......
Uhmm some trans thoughts I rambled to my partner about F+C below!↓
The concept of fern . Transitioning as an adult, (or perhaps Spirit entity is more accurate?) is so fascinating because until they became sword Finn they have the exact same memories as main Finn, same childhood, same friends and foes. Then they became cursed with grass and became A Finn, again. But was treated differently by everyone they knew and loved because there was already A Finn, even if They were technically the original that was replaced. This experience was harrowing and isolating and the grass curse made them lash out influencing their every action and word, they wanted so badly to be Themselves but found that they couldn't be the person in their own memories anymore, they couldn't talk to their own brother anymore. Brutal stuff!!
(If fern was able to spend any time with Jermaine I think it would have been a different story but that just wasn't the case in the series...)
Skip ahead after torturing main Finn a bit- The grass curse is destroyed! But this causes fern to entirely loose form, and continue the cycle of the tree once lost. And as far as we knew fern the person, died that day. BUT IN F+C THEY DIDNT!! They continued to grow and change, watching people's pain as a detached vouyer. Supposedly free from the curse but still with (spirit??) form. Allowed to grow and change how they want. But in the sense of transitioning or even presenting more feminine than main Finn, where would this feeling and urge stem from? They're alone they could fall into complete disregard of appearance, and yet they don't! Is the feeling to differentiate from Finn so strong they reject his boyish masculinity as a whole? Is main Finn repressing these feelings his whole life?? He does . Have a trans girlfriend in Huntress Wizard,..., and has always been surrounded by women... His only long lasting male behaviour model was Jake, and IceKing..... But Finn is the epitome of Boyhood! Boy toys! Boy Media! It's a really fascinating look into gender and alternate selves.
Fern is isolated in their new home, sometimes talking to a certain cosmic therapy worm, somehow Fern has processed their feelings more than Main Finn in this way (lol).
Perhaps Earth/plant elementals and magic just have a sort of essence of feminity, life and transformation an affinity for It, like huntress wizard? Or are genderless and reflect what's comforting, reflect their ideal? Maybe boobs are cool and fern was like that's awesome Ive always kinda wanted those. That rules.
Huntress Wizard and Hunter already explore such a fascinating facet of gender, both being transitioned and only able to recognise the self, and not the journey (Misgendering each other and believing the other a coward, not really noticing that they're doing that) because seeing yourself as the opposite of what you are is triggering !! Its uncomfortable!! It's something I've discussed with other trans friends, and before transitioning it's... Euphoric to consider. That potential future. While hellish to consider once you've already put in the hard work.
I can see Fern, being a Finn, becoming pretty detached from their body. But being able to reclaim it with their hair, their clothes, their body. They do seem much happier down there.
Is Main Finn too much of a meathead to care? What does this say about gender as a whole in the wider universe of ooo? I don't know!!! Did the writers/artists just wanna trans her gender?? Probably!! Did her connection to her finn-ship become . Severed somehow allowing their own self to be explored more openly? Or is just every fucking Finn transgender,.................... guys what's the rammies, the rammifications.
