Lots of people are posting about what Nick and his R1 shows have meant to them today and god, what a trip it’s been, reliving it all. I’ve been exchanging messages with my oldest Nick fan pals all day, talking about how we were in a place of massive transition or low points in our lives when we started listening to him, how having him there every day got us through Some Things.
I put most of my feelings about Nick and the power of radio into Doodle of a Surface Life, so if you’re inclined to read literally 100,000 words on the matter they’re there for you, but I wanted to take a moment just to say thank you to Nick fandom. While I’ve been here, I’ve changed names, come out, moved across the country, estranged myself from my terrible family, and started a completely new life.
And just like Nick, you guys were often exactly what I needed when things were rough. Thank you for your humour. Thank you for your kindness. And thank you for your friendship. Online or off, casual or ride or die, it held me up when I needed it--much like Matt Fincham carting Nick and his broken leg to Cafe Mambo.
I really hope we all do indeed see Nick around sometime, somewhere, in the not too distant future, not just because he’s one of the truly great broadcasters of our time, but because hanging out with you all has been literally the best.
