Last year, during Microsoft’s E3 Press Conference event that I covered for OpposingViews, there was one indie game that caught my eye. Published and developed by GRIN Studios, Woolfe: The Red Hood Diaries is an action platformer that puts a new spin on the classic fairytale we all heard as children growing up.
In the game, a grown up Red Riding Hood is out to avenge the death of her parents at the hands of B.B. Woolfe. Along the way, she will have bloody and deadly encounters with familiar fairytale characters on her quest to kill her nemesis.
Currently, the game is available on STEAM for $9.99, but a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version of the game are expected to be released sometime later this year. Hopefully collecting both volumes of the story – Volume 1 is available now on STEAM with Volume 2 being made available in August – in one collectors’ edition type format.
From what I have seen of the game (because, to be honest, I would rather wait for the console editions of the game before purchasing it) it looks really sleek and exciting. Kind of what I remember it looking like during the Microsoft E3 event. Actually, looking at the newest launch trailer for the game, it looks a lot more polished and beautiful than it did before. This looks like the kind of game that I would love to play and get lost in.
Still, for those of you that can’t wait, the game is available on STEAM right now for $9.99; I just prefer to wait this one out for the console release. But I will not rule out buying it on STEAM just to whet my whistle on this for a bit.
Woolfe: The Red Hood Diaries Key Features:
A twisted fairy tale story – GRIN’s take on the Red Riding Hood legacy is not an ordinary bedtime story. Four years ago, Red Riding Hood’s father, Joseph, lead engineer for Woolfe Industries, died in a work accident. At least, that’s what his family was told. All grown up, our heroine is ready to unveil the truth and present the bill for her tragic loss.
A Rich, Visual Experience – Woolfe’s atmospheric artwork lets the player explore a rich fantasy universe centered around a city paralyzed with fear and occupied by tin soldiers. Sneak through the slums, descend into the city sewer system, run through the harbor and escape the city into an evil forest, where gravity, wolves and scary fairies are out to get you.
5D Action-Platforming – The tale’s 2.5D levels combine the simplicity of side scrolling gameplay with three-dimensional puzzles.
Fast, Axe Wielding Combat – Armed with her trusty axe, Red will need to skillfully execute combos to strike at her foes’ weaknesses.
Deranged Fairytale Enemies – On her journey, Red faces some bloody encounters with “familiar fairytale faces” such as The Pied Piper, tin soldiers, big bad wolves, scary fairies and – of course – her nemesis B.B. Woolfe.

GRIN was founded in 2002 as a research and development studio for online and browser-based games and applications. For over a decade, GRIN’s interactive creations were used for installations, events, campaigns and educational purposes – mainly for clients. Over the past few years, GRIN invested in its creative independency with a series of mobile games for pre-schoolers and a first big indie-title for PC and console (expected in 2015).
Though at first sight diverse in outcome, GRIN’s portfolio is characterized by one leitmotif: an insatiable hunger for new technologies and opportunities in interactive storytelling. http://www.grin.be/
