She knew she wasn’t going to end up saying something as ‘witty’ as he probably would expect. Nua wasn’t very ‘educated’ as someone as the Emperor of Garlemald was after all. Still, she wasn’t going to stand by and let the bastard insult her.

“And was your mother a piece of cardboard? Because that is by far the most tasteless comment I expected to come out of your mouth.” She shifted to one side, trying not to look too prideful of her ‘witty’ comeback as she took a sip of her beloved alcohol.

Oh she wanted to play, did she? A poor choice on her part: she had not the tools required to compete in a battle of wits. Nevertheless, he would humor her. 

“I didn’t even realize you had taste. I thought you’d burnt it all away, nursing that bottle.”

Emet-Selch leaned towards the Warrior of Darkness, grabbing her chin between his fingers to force her to look him straight in the eye. On his face, a bad expression, far from the almost affable attitude he had when he met them at Crystarium. His eyebrows were slightly wrinkled, his golden hues surrounded by black, almost shining with an evil and heavy aura, like the burden he carried on his shoulders.

"Oh... But... this light will eventually consume you and you will become a monster, whether you like it or not," he said in an acerbic, cold voice.

It wasn’t that they were a stranger to tests of strength. 

Fury knows their entire childhood was built on recklessly challenging their master and Sidurgu to any kind of competition they could think of, the former nigh untouchable while they could knock the other on his arse most of the time. But they were older and wiser now, they liked to think. Wise enough to choose their battles carefully, anyways. 

Fray watched the auri woman with guarded interest as she slammed another drunkard’s arm onto the polished wood, the resulting yelp making them wince. A curious sight, she was. Rarely did someone become so bored by the shoddy ballads put on the Knight’s tipsy bards that they jumped into the midst of an arm-wrestling competition between off-duty soldiers. 

And win, to boot. They knew what Sid could do without a sword, tear men apart with a desperate ferocity dredged up from the bottom of the abyss. Rend flesh with obsidian claws, snap bones without remorse, shatter ribs to rip out still-beating hearts… that sort of thing. The woman bore the same dark scales and horns, prompting Fray to shake their head with an apologetic half-smile when her sharp gaze landed on them expectantly.

“‘Fraid I’ll have to decline the offer.” They raised their hands in a placating motion to further their point.

(They’d like to keep their arm intact for tonight's patrol, thank you very much.)

There was a slight pause as she approached the oddly scaled woman. Though she had been intrigued and wanted to tug at the horns to see if they were real, Esther had decided not to. Not a good first impression would be made if she did that. People didn’t like tugging, after all. So she instead gave a small grin and raised her hand in greeting.

“Hey. You know the way to the guild? I was told that’s where ‘new adventurers’ need to sign up but I can’t find it anywhere in this place.”

If this is where he dies, so be it. He wouldn’t care. (He would.) It would be fine. (It would absolutely not be!) Zephirin’s quite sure the unspoken laws of Reunion are the only thing protecting him besides his armor on his sorry hide and the claymore on his back, but if he’d gotten just short of eradicated ten times over at Azys Lla when he was as close to divinity as one could get, he likely wouldn’t last longer than a minute in true combat. He knows what he’d done, even if the memories are strange like fogged glass. He expects no mercy. Hope is another matter entirely.

One thing is certain- There’s no point in bothering with any attempt at self-defense. Hopefully, she won’t attack him, and he will most certainly make no move to start a vain (and illegal, mind you) struggle. He still eyes the warrior warily, uncertain if she’d be kept by something like law even in what he assumes to be her homeland. He simply lifts his hands, fingers spread and palms forwards in peaceful gesture. If there is a quaver in his voice, if it is softer than his usual tone, he does not admit to it.

“What is your intent?”

The Ascian would have liked to answer that he had much better things to do than to observe the Hydaelyn's Champion. Unfortunately, this was not the case. He was not named "The Architect" for nothing. The projects he planned were always built and think for the short, medium and long term. The flood of Light on the First Shard was expected in the medium term. He and Elidibus had sown the seeds of the chaos necessary for its accomplishment and they had germinated and were not far from reaching their full blossoming. All he had to do was observe from afar, making sure his plan went well, before reaping the rewards.

However, the arrival of the Xaela did not seem to worry him too much. As if it were just an insignificant grain of sand throughout the perfectly oiled mechanics. But he'd rather keep an eye on her. This is for several reasons. In addition to finding it entertaining.

"What is it, dear Warrior of Darkness? Does my presence bother you so much?" he replied with a ghost smirk on his lips, raising his hands with a falsely innocent look.
