The flag for the Northern Cape province is actually the flag of Griquas, a subset of South Africa's "Coloured" population. This design was chosen in recognition of the Griqualand West, a state that existed in what is now the Northern Cape Province. and as recognition of the fact that Coloureds make up the majority of the province’s population.
