Hen Party | Drabble

July 15, 1979

Alice Prewett had fully anticipated spending her final full weekend as a Prewett doing nothing but finishing details for the wedding, but her friends clearly had other intentions for her. Though she’d considered staying the weekend at Frank’s, and what would soon be her flat, Hestia had lured her in with wine and cookies and one last weekend being together. And really, considering how she was so abruptly leaving her best friend to take over their home on her own, how could Alice refuse her anything? 

Friday night had gone so lovely, night curled up in their living room, going over old memories, getting lightly buzzed, and munching on snacks until, curled up together on the floor, they fell asleep. 

Waking up, Alice had anticipated a day of packing and cleaning perhaps. Instead, Hestia and herself made a spot of breakfast, and her dearest friend ushered her out for an errand of sorts. 

The errand, it turned out, was a day at the spa. Giggling, Alice agreed to as much, though she pointed out that such a trip would be best for next Saturday. After a full body deep tissue massage, Alice made her way out to the area where she was meant to meet Hestia for pedicure and manicures, only to find the room filled with every one of her bridesmaids waiting for her. 

Many a hug and hellos later, all seven girls found themselves being made over, sharing stories and laughs until all of their nails were in perfect shape once more, and everyone received a refreshing facial and shoulder massages. 

Next, the women lead Alice to the beach, where they’d prepared a raft to float out into water, stocked with a lovely picnic basket filled with Amelia’s grans infamous pasta, wine, and fruit for lunch. The seven sailed out far enough into Tinworths beautiful waters to evade all those swimming and enjoying the day in order to sunbathe, and for Alice to finally tell the story she’d been itching to tell the girls. 

She’d begun from the start as they all sipped on wine, telling them of how she’d always had a sort of admiration for Frank that somewhere along the way had turned into something she hadn’t even recognized as being a crush. That it wasn’t until she entered the Auror Academy and saw Frank regularly that she realized there was something more there. 

That before they began working together, she knew they would be together one day, how it developed as they worked together. Growing day by day, like the most beautiful of flowers, slowly blooming into the most beautiful of the bush. How by Christmas, she knew she would love him until her dying day. 

Then, how they’d been mid-fight about something involving work when he, very abruptly, asked her to marry him. How she was so incredibly furious with him, and at that moment, near heartbroken in having to tell him no. 

Quickly, she moved forwards, onto the happier things of them promising one another July, and him speaking to her father, and then proposing once more while on a small vacation, and after destroying her in Gin Rummy, as per usual. 

Lunch came and went swiftly as her friends all grilled her with questions, digging for more information. By the time they decided to sail back to shore, Alice was positive she’d told them everything about her relationship minus one, very important story. The time she nearly died. For Alice, that particular one would remain in the vault, to protect her friends, and herself. 

By the time they reached shore, a familiar face greeted them, Marlene McKinnon. At first, Alice was rather worried she may make some sort of comment, particularly with the way she looked her over at first. But fortunately for her, Marlene seemed to have other things in mind for the day, and soon enough Alice found her clothing being changed and everyone was guided off to the next adventure.

Roller Derby. 

The adventure that followed was both painful and full of laughter once all of the women allowed themselves to relax and have fun with it. Many a bruises were earned, a little blood shed here and there, and Alice couldn’t remember feeling more alive nor more excited to live. The rush could rival that of dueling, something Alice thought to be impossible. 

Marlene made Alice promise to come do it again, in her normal joking sort of manner, but Alice had every intention to do just that. Not only to bond with Marlene more, but to indulge in the strange high the sport gave her. 

As the now group of eight left, Alice was rather looking forward to going home and crashing for the night -- but the girls had other ideas. Before she could attempt to invite them to spend the night at her and Hestia’s home for the night, they were dragging her off (after making her change into a rather flashy, non-Alice type of dress) to the Groovy Ghoul. A place she hadn’t been since Robert’s birthday, which she only briefly made an appearance at. 

What was to follow was what one would imagine of a hen party. More alcohol than Alice had consumed in her entire life, enough dancing to make her feet ache for days, a tiara marking her as the bride to be that Alice would hold onto in a secret spot to remember the day forever, and men who danced a little too provocatively and with a little too little in the way of clothing a little too closely to a very drunk Alice who could only giggle until she could no longer breathe many a time. 

The next morning, she would wake to a body that felt close to death, but for that night, Alice felt as though she were on top of the world, even if her heart ached for Frank to be with her. It filled her with so much love and light to know that even if Frank would become her husband, that she would always have so many people by her side to love and care for through the good times and bad.

Place one of these words and a character/pairing/series in my inbox and I’ll write a drabble about it.

Risio : Laughter

One of the very best parts of being a Gryffindor, is laughter is never too far off. A roaring fight in the common room? Wait ten minutes, the roaring will only be that of laughter. Tense study afternoon? Someone will cut the tension with a witty remark that allows everyone a moment of amusement before returning to the books. Sad day? Someone will be quick to pull a laugh out of you to brighten the skies. 

To Peter, laughter was an ever constant thing, and it was something of a gift. One of many that came with being a Marauder. 

One particular night of their fourth year, they each sat at the end of their beds, throwing sweets to one another, James and Sirius telling stories to pull out reactions from Remus and Peter. 

While Remus had grown somewhat tired of the antics and overly exaggerated stories ten minutes beforehand, and pulled his homework out to work on, Peter remained entirely wrapped up in the pictures the two painted. 

So much so, that soon enough he found himself unable to catch his breath, tears prickling at the corner of his eyes as he wheezed painfully. “Y-Youre j-j-j-OKING!” he finally managed, rocking back and forth on his bum. 

“Careful Prongs, make him laugh any more and we’ll be helping him clean his piss up,” Sirius joked. Though a brief shot of shame went through Peter (as he really did need to use the loo), the sentiment made him laugh all the more. 

“Come off it Padfoot, dogs are the ones who go pissing on things to claim as their own,” James shot back. 

Before Sirius could give what would surely be a witty comeback that would send Peter into oblivion, the wheezing, crying, laughing boy bolted up, stumbling over his feet as he fought to get to the bathroom because, Merlin save him, he was going to do it if they kept on like this. 

“Oh now, see what you’ve done?” Sirius laughed. “Run Wormy, run!” 

And run, Peter did. Least, as well as a bloke who can’t breath can run.

makes friends with the neighbors: doug, who has a better filter on his mouth and therefore is less likely to offend someone 

is the adventurous eater: doug will promise something tastes good and then marlene will trust his word and try it and then he’ll never hear the end of it if she ends up hating it 

hogs the covers at night: marlene seems like a covers hog 

forgets to do the dishes: doug has been adulting longer so he has seen the wreckage that can occur when one forgets about the dishes for too long 

tries to surprise their sibling more often: this doesn’t seem like a mckinnon family trait tbh i don’t think either of them have this gene 

leaves dirty laundry on the floor: okay i take back the adulting thing for doug he’s really bad about doing laundry 

stays up til 2 AM reading: marlene because doug doesn’t have the patience for spending long periods of time reading 

sings in the shower: this is a mckinnon family trait so both

plans date night: this is something they fight over they both think they have the best ideas

walden & rabastan

falls asleep on the couch: Rabastan but only when they’re at Walden’s flat. Veronika Lestrange would never tolerate such behavior in her home.

makes friends with the neighbors: Rabastan, who more or less begins speaking to them purely to assure them Walden isn’t someone they should be worried about, he just doesn’t talk much. 

is the adventurous eater: Rabastan. Walden is a terribly picky eater.

hogs the covers at night: Rabastan, though Walden is a super secret cuddle bug, so it doesn’t really make a difference.

forgets to do the dishes: Walden. It’s rare but it happens, the down falls of not having a house elf I tell you.

tries to surprise their partner more often: Walden. He likes being able to be the reason Rab smiles. He’s all gross and cheesy.

leaves dirty laundry on the floor: Again Walden. He really should invest in an elf.

stays up til 2 AM reading: Rabastan.

sings in the shower: They duet. Fight me. 

takes the selfies: Walden, but only because he’s taller and otherwise his head gets cut off.

plans date night: They take turns, even if it’s not really ‘date’ like.

makes friends with the neighbors; Sybill tries, but sort of weirds people out a little, so Lori ends up being friends with more than her. 

is the adventurous eater; Both, though Sybill tends to be better about picking the good tasting ones. 

hogs the covers at night; Both, the blankets and sheets tend to end up tangled between them. 

forgets to do the dishes; Lori, until she gets the hang of cleaning things at the pub, then Sybill. 

tries to surprise their partner more often; Lori tries, but Sybill always says she had a good idea it was coming. 

leaves dirty laundry on the floor; Boooth, Sybill is more likely to clean up. 

stays up til 2 AM reading; Sybill, though really I’d expect neither of them. 

sings in the shower; Both, without a doubt. 

takes the selfies; Booooth. The aesthetic tho. 

plans date night; Neither, the plans are in the stars, they just let fate guide them ;)

Lucius, initially making introductions at some extremely shocked influential associates with Marlene in tow rolling her eyes at it all; five minutes later he is trying to drag Marlene away from heated arguments that are wrecking havoc with his politics…

is the adventurous eater

Lucius; Marlene is suspicious of any fancy party food resembling duck and it’s impossible to tell if Lucius is lying when he tells her what the meat is

hogs the covers at night

Marlene, keeping Lucius’ up half the night plotting petty vengeance - next time, he’ll tell her it’s not duck

forgets to do the dishes

Admit it, McKinnon, it’s nice to be untroubled about such things

tries to surprise their partner more often

Both; there is an unspoken competition between them trying to prove who could better survive, nay, thrive in what the other calls a lifestyle

Neither; Marlene stubbornly refrains just to spite Lucius about his house-elf quip and general attitude

Neither; they grudgingly appreciate each other’s regular bedtimes

Both; and both are equally horrified when they find themselves humming the other’s music

Marlene; Lucius is annoyed that she deliberately only keeps the photos in which he’s doing something undignified like yawning or checking his reflection
