wow so im rereading fly by night even though im clearly not emotionally equipped to deal w/ this fucking book

because dear god reading the first book again after reading fly trap is even more painful

because going back to the beginning gives you a full sense of just how much mosca and clent's relationship has progressed, just how far they've come

like they start off with nothing positive between them at all and a such big part of the plot of fly by night revolves around them selling each other out and abandoning each other and him selling her things and her telling his secrets

and they somehow make it through that, through all the false accusations and murders and almost-hangings to the point where she actually chooses the ridiculously uncertain life he offers, over the comfort of staying in mandelion

and then fly trap just kind of nails it in harder with her getting him out of debtors' jail even though she could just leave him, and him vouching for her in front of the mayor despite her name and the liability she's always been

and then theres that huge awful crushing moment where shes about to be sent to the night town and she tells him to just go to just leave her because hes never really cared anyways

and somehow they still manage to get over it and to work through it because each other is all they have in the world and they know it. she even acknowledges it out loud at one point, that the only person in the entire city of toll she can trust is eponymous clent

and theyre okay and theyre perfect and he sneaks her crusts of bread through the hole in the floor and stays by her even when she puts them both in danger by blurting out everything she knows to beamabeth, they stick together and she throws stones at the town walls and confronts the locksmiths and he helps her finish what she's started

and they both still keep their secrets because thats the only way they work, but she chooses him over goshawk, she still chooses him and his borrowed time and that's a MILLION MILES away from back when she was selling him out to lady tamarind because he gave her goose away

theyve come so far and they are so perfect im going to cry oh my god mosca and clent are hands down one of my favourite fictional duos of all time
