One of Michigan's preeminent examples of the domestic Gothic Revival style, 24808 East River Road was built in 1859 for Samuel Lewis, a prominent banker in Detroit. The design is right out of the writings of Andrew Jackson Downing, more specifically his book, The Architecture of Country Houses, published in 1850. The home is constructed of brick with board-and-batten siding. Other exterior features include ornamental brick chimneys, decorative bargeboards (a. k .a. gingerbread) and a wide veranda. The home was originally known as "The Lilacs", because of a lilac hedge on the property. After Lewis, the home was purchased by Kirkland C. Barker, Detroit mayor and tobacco magnate. Frank A. Osburn, a successful lumber businessman, also lived here. The home has never been remodeled in its 160-year history. Grosse Ile is the largest of the islands located in the Detroit River. Several well-to-do Detroiters, looking for retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life, built summer residences on the island. Gordon W. Lloyd, a talented young architect from England, designed several homes on East River Road in the Gothic Revival style strongly influenced by the writings of Andrew Jackson Downing. Among them was this home, built in 1859 for Samuel T. Douglass and his wife, Elizabeth. Mr. Douglass served as a judge on both the Wayne County Circuit Court and Michigan Supreme Court. In 1882, Douglass and his former law partner (and brother of his wife), James V.
