Maria had no siblings of which to be jealous, but she could neverthelss empathize with Nebula over not being her father's favorite.

The problem was, of course, that her father's favorite had been her mother, and her mother had died in childbirth.

She'd internalized years of abuse and blame for it that it seemed natural and even logical that her father should blame her. She truly believed it was her fault.
