Old and new together. The top shelf is a collection of pieces from various times during my Grotesque De Elegance series of work. The lower shelf contains 4 new wheel thrown forms to become new sculptures in the series. It’s been almost a year since I worked on this series. The break was filled with kiln building, workshop teaching, demos and working on my functional ware. It’s been good to take a break from the series as I felt it was starting to get stale. I have a renewed energy for the work. The series is an exploration of my own body image issues and society’s view and commentary on the body. How to make an unsalable pot. Start with a perfect beautiful round pot. Let it sit over night under a bucket to stiffen up. Then attack it with a color shaper, fingers, a sponge and a soft rubber rib. Push from the inside, push from the outside, take your issues with obesity and make luscious curves. Fold the top over, connect it together, push and shape the bottom to make delicate feet on an obese pot. Once you finish that put the bucket back on top and let it sit over night again to even out the moisture in the pot and do it again. This is how I create my series #grotesquedeelegance.
