         his   arm   was   thrown   loosely   around   her   shoulders .   she   was   close   enough   that   he   could   feel   her   hair   brush   his   jawline   with   every   slight  jump   the   film   elicited   from   her .   don’t   be   mistaken                    he   didn’t   ENJOY   her   fear ,   but   he   did   find   it   a   bit   comical   in   the  most   endearing   way .   ❛   what ?! ❜   feigned   shock   dances   across   his   features   as   a   quiet   smirk   comes   to   his   lips . 

          ❛  you’re   not   giving   up   on   it   already ,   are   you ?  ❜    truthfully  ,   he   couldn’t   have   cared   less   about   the   movie                       but   he   wouldn’t   pass   up   an   excuse   to   tease   her   about   it .  he   tightens   the   arm   that   rests   atop   her   shoulders ,   pulling   her   ever   closer .    ❛  i   GUESS   giving   you   nightmares   wasn’t   as   romantic   as   i   thought   it’d   be .  ❜

❝  mom    .  .  .     ?  ❞           quiet   as   a   mouse     ,    jacob’s   body   turns   the   corner   to   where   his   mother   sat   .        uncomfortable   with   the   display   of   emotion   painted   across   her   face     ,     hands   fidget   at   his   side   until   they’re   sealed   away   from   her   view   .         hard   swallow    ,     recalling   what   people   do   on   t . v     .      acting   the   way   he   thinks   he’s   supposed   to   act    ,    while   his   eyes   lacked   the   depth   everyone   seemed   to   look   for .          ❝  𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓'𝐒    𝐖𝐑𝐎𝐍𝐆    ?  ❞        regretful   as   soon   as   the   words   leave   his   mouth   .       there’s   hesitance   ,   shown   in   the   way   his   eyes   can’t   meet   with   his   mother’s   for   more   than  a   second    ,    the   way   his   mouth   hung   open   as   if   he   wasn’t   finished   his   sentence     :    maybe   he   was   ,    𝐡𝐞   𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭   𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧’𝐭   𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞 . 

❝  if  -  if   this   is   because   of   what   you   said   to   that   lady    ,    i   don’t   think   anyone   cares  .  ❞        young   child   ,   such   heavy   burdens   laid   over   his   shoulders    .     could   he  ever   understand   his   mother’s   grief  ?     ❝  it’s   pretty   cool    ,    y’know   ?      like   we’re   famous .    ❞

𝚑𝚎’𝚜   𝚜𝚞𝚕𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐  .          head   supported   by   both   hands   as   his   mother   moved   effortlessly   around   the   kitchen    -    despite   her   reluctance   to   give   his   homemade   lunch   of    (  under   cooked  )   pasta   ,   ham    &    mayonnaise   a   real   compliment    ,    whatever   she   was   cooking   smelt   divine  .    like   the   warmth   his   childhood   was   so   rapidly   losing   all   forced   into   a   pot   ,   left   to   simmer   like   no   big   deal .

❝  not   really   .  ❞       standing    regardless   of   his   words   ,   jacob   makes   his   way   around   the   table   to   the   oven   .     wooden   spoon   feels    &    looks   awkward   in   his   hand    ,   𝙖𝙨   𝙞𝙛   𝙝𝙚’𝙨   𝙗𝙤𝙩𝙝   𝙩𝙤𝙤   𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙡    &    𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙩   𝙛𝙤𝙧   𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨   𝙖𝙩   𝙩𝙝𝙚   𝙨𝙖𝙢𝙚   𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚   .      with   little   to   no   confidence   ,    the   spoon   is   dipped   into   the   pot   ,   stirring   around   the   ingredients .    ❝  i   mean  .   .   .    ❞      started    ,    without   prompt   from   his   mother   .    ❝  i’ll   eat   whatever   you   call   this   . . .     but   i’ll   be   missin’   my   pasta .    it   was   great .  ❞       mediocre   .

❝  mom    ,    please     --------    !  ❞            jacob’s   plea   is   barely   heard   over   the   music    ,    𝚋𝚘𝚢’𝚜   𝚟𝚘𝚒𝚌𝚎   𝚚𝚞𝚒𝚎𝚝   𝚎𝚗𝚘𝚞𝚐𝚑   𝚊𝚜   𝚒𝚝   𝚒𝚜   :   yelling   never   came   natural   ,   cords   was   always   easy   to   crack   .      there   isn’t   any   real   annoyance   behind   his   words    ,    though   he   makes   his   arms   purposely   too   limp   for   his   mother   to   do   anything   with  .     embarrassment   flushes   pale   cheeks    ,    head   falling   back   to   laugh   ,   however   rare   that   had   become   in   recent   years .       ❝  at   least   put   something   good   on   !  ❞

𝚐𝚊𝚣𝚎   𝚑𝚊𝚍   𝚕𝚊𝚒𝚍   𝚞𝚙𝚘𝚗   𝚑𝚒𝚜   𝚑𝚊𝚗𝚍𝚜   𝚏𝚘𝚛   𝚜𝚘   𝚕𝚘𝚗𝚐   𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚝   𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚢   𝚍𝚒𝚍𝚗’𝚝   𝚕𝚘𝚘𝚔   𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚕   𝚊𝚗𝚢𝚖𝚘𝚛𝚎    ,     the   same   hands   he   had   watched   squeeze   the   life   out   of   a   girl   who   liked   him    -    he’s   not   sure   if   his   brutal   touch   was   what   killed   her   ,     𝙊𝙍   𝙏𝙃𝙀   𝙊𝘾𝙀𝘼𝙉   𝙒𝘼𝙏𝙀𝙍   𝙄𝙉   𝙃𝙀𝙍   𝙇𝙐𝙉𝙂𝙎   𝙒𝙃𝙀𝙉   𝙃𝙀   𝙃𝘼𝘿   𝘿𝙄𝙎𝘾𝘼𝙍𝘿𝙀𝘿   𝙊𝙁   𝙃𝙀𝙍  .    hands   flex   into   fists   as   he   remembers   the   dead   weight   of   her   against   his   palms  .      jacob   tries   to   feel   something   other   than   numb   ,   or   angry   that   he   had   acted   on   impulse    &    now   ,    they   were   thrown   right   in   the   middle   of   a   nightmare   because   of   him   .

it’s   like   he   didn’t   realize  how   quiet   the   room   had   become   in   the   minutes   he   had   been   reminiscing   about   the   night   before  ,   or  had   it   been   hours    ?       jacob   tilts   his   head   up   slowly   ,    eyebrows   furrowing   as   he   looks   for   his   father    ,    but   is   only   met   with   the   questioning   eyes   of   his   mother  .      it’s   like   she   sees   right   through   him   ,   𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭   𝐭𝐨   𝐭𝐡𝐞   𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐥   𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭   𝐬𝐡𝐞   𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝   .      he   moves   to   stand   ,   feeling   too   small   with   her   height   above   him  .     boy   was   growing   ,    soon   he   would   be   head    &    shoulders   over   her  . . .    but   for   now   ,    jacob   still   needs   to   look   up   at   his   mother  .        try   as   he   might   ,   young   boy   could   not   pick   apart   all   the   emotions   that   lay   within   his   mother’s   gaze     ,    anger   stands   out   to   him   like   a   giant   red   flag  .      he   could   never   be   able   to   see   the   heartbreak   ,    the   loss   or   the   grief   . 

❝  what   .  .  .   ?  ❞        here   he   stands    ,    accused   once   again   .    mouth   hung   open   ,    speechless   for   a   few   seconds   .     ❝  how   can   you   even   ask   me   that   ?     i   told   you   what   happened  !  ❞       voice   raises    &    he   takes   a   step   closer   to   laurie    ,    cold   eyes   dead   set   on   hers     :         𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧   𝐭𝐨   𝐦𝐞  .       ❝  it’s   not   my   fault   that   she’s   stupid   enough   to   go    &   get   herself   drowned  ,   mom  !   ❞        anger   is   quick   to   flare    ,    hands   flying   up   between   them   to   express   his   utter   frustation   .     how   dare   she   suspect   the   truth   .      ❝  i   didn’t   do   it  .     i   didn’t .   ❞

    ❛           to tell me the truth, laurie.  ALL I want is the truth. ❜  that’s it. it should be as simple as that.   he the attorney, she the witness.   the STAR of the show, at least for the current moment.   𝐒𝐇𝐄.   he’s just the puppet master, pulling the strings.   𝐋𝐀𝐔𝐑𝐈𝐄.    he would have never thought he’d find her sitting across from him, in a way that feels too sterile for anyone’s sanity.  certainly not his.  perhaps not hers either.  perhaps, in a better world, their only association would be through the district attorney’s office.  in a better world.   but this was reality, where there was a balance of GOOD AND BAD.    this was not the laurie people described, this was NOT the laurie that the small town of NEWTON uplifted.  but this was all he had to go on. what shell there was of her, and the her she presented.  he was not a cruel man, and he had no intentions of breaking her.   she could do that herself.   he hates how alone this makes him feel, how utterly ruthless he feels, but when things didn’t ADD up, it was his job to search for justice   &    and his job to find the truth.       𝐓𝐎 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐒 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐒, 𝐑𝐄𝐆𝐀𝐑𝐃𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒 𝐖𝐇𝐎 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐔𝐍𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐄.     𝐔𝐍𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐒 𝐁𝐄 𝐃𝐀𝐌𝐍𝐄𝐃.

          andy   had   come   to   cherish   the   night   much   more   than   he’d   ever   thought   that   he   would .   it   wasn’t   that   he   hadn’t   appreciated   their   quiet ,  hidden   nature   before                             but   everything   was   different   now .   they   were   living   their   lives   under   the   scrutinous    eyes   of   enemies   who   were   once   allies .   he   wasn’t   foolish   enough   to   think   that   judgement   simply   ceased   when   the   sun   went   down ,   but   the   curious   case   of   the   barber   boy   was   better   whispered   about   across   dinner   tables   &   mumbled   beneath   the   evening   news .   things   were   quiet .   he   might   even   pretend   that   they   were   peaceful . 

          and   maybe ,   truthfully ,   beneath   these   sheets ,   they   were .    with   their   son   presumably   sleeping   down   the   hall   &   the   buzz   of   idle   electricity   in   his   ear ,   there   was   almost   a   perfect   facade   of   before .   ALMOST .   there   was   a   new   tension   that   lay   between   them   in   the   slight   centimeters   where   their   limbs   weren’t   entwined .   her   cheek   lay   against   his   chest ,   but   he   could   feel   it   wedging   it’s   way   in .   it   hadn’t   couldn’t   have   completely   settled   in                         or   maybe   she   felt   it  too ,  and   that’s   why   she   said   it .  it   set   him   at   ease  .   they   would   get   through   this .   they   might   not   emerge   unscathed ,   but   there   would   be   an   after .   he   leans   forward   to   press   his   lips   to   her   forehead ,  lingering   for   a   second   too   long .   ❛   i   love   you   too .  i   don’t   think   i   say   that   enough .  ❜
