Pokémon: Upon a New Horizon - Katie Gemwing TV Tropes

A young woman from the town of Silverwood in the Galar Region and the secondary main protagonist of Pokémon: A New Horizon. Katie enrolled in the Coconut Academy in Goldenrod City in the Johto Region to start her Pokémon journey with Nalu the Popplio as her starter Pokémon.

The Ace:

Adorkable: She’s usually a mature and easy going young woman, but when she’s actually in the presence of Leon, she leans towards being a flustered mess, practically fumbling on her words and tries to hide her face behind her hat.

Affectionate Nickname: Among her family and friends, she is often referred to as Kate.

All-Loving Heroine:

Always Second Best: While she’s blooming to become a skilled and strong trainer in her own right as time passes, Katie admits that she still has a lot of catching up and is yet to reach a certain level to beat powerful trainers such as Leon, who is the unbeatable Champion of Galar.

Berserk Button:

She has zero tolerance towards bullies.

May Arceus have mercy on your soul if you happen to be an arrogant trainer who gleefully bully, abuse or even abandon Pokémon.

She will even hunt down any thieves or poachers to the ends of the earth for trying to harm or steal Pokémon, whether they’d be wild, someone else’s or even her own.

The Beautiful Elite: Half of her Pokémon team consisted of very beautiful consisting of Nalu the Primarina, Glimmer the Galarian Rapidash, Wynter the Alolan Ninetales and Eclipse the shiny Umbreon (and yes, she’s female).

Beware the Nice Ones:

Big Sister Instinct:

Big “WHAT?!”: She actually screamed this out when Rachel noticed Leon among the crowd of Gym Leaders visiting the Coconut Academy when Alicia and Thomas were about to have their first Pokémon battle. So big and loud in fact, she accidentally startled a few students standing close to her.

Birds of a Feather:

Blue is Heroic: She is one of the main protagonists and she wears some blue clothing.

Bully Hunter:

Camera Shy: Played with. She’s fine with having her photo taken for her I.D. or for a family photo. But when having her picture taken with celebrity is a mild issue. She is quick to shy away when Raihan requested to have a selfie with her. She does get better at the end.

Crush Blush:

Cuteness Proximity:

Death Glare: She’s very prone to give out a very intimidating one towards those who push her Berserk Button.

Determinator: As a Pokémon Trainer, she’s determined to make her dream of becoming among the strongest a reality.

Dragon Rider:

Dragon Tamer: She obtains a Noivern, which evolved from a Noibat she had nursed back to health when he had broken his wing.

Even the Loving Hero has Hated Ones: She hates Thomas for being a Smug Snake who makes it his goal in life to bully Alicia and disrespects any Pokémon he deems beneath him by calling them weak.

Fangirl: Just like her friends, some of the students at the academy and all of the people in the Galar Region, Katie is a huge fan of Champion Leon and has crush on him.

Friend to All Livings: She seems to have a natural gift of befriending Pokémon.

Girls Love Stuffed Animals: She has a Pikachu plushie she often carries and hugs for emotional support whenever she feels anxious before she obtained her first Pokémon when arriving at the academy.

Graceful Loser:

The Heart:

Heroes Loves Dogs: She obtains a Riolu which will eventually evolve into a Lucario, which are both dog-like.

I Just Want to be Special: One of her reasons she wants to become a Pokémon trainer. When she was younger, she was bullied at her previous school because of her autism and she wanted to prove all of her former bullies wrong that autistic people can be capable and stronger trainers as well.

Innocent Blue Eyes:

It was a Gift: Her jewelled Z-Ring was a gift from her nana to wish her luck during her enrolment at the Coconut Academy.

Karmic Jackpot:

Luminescent Blush: She is usually prone to this when flustered in the presence of Leon or whenever she is teased by Rachel about her crush on the Champion.

Making a Splash: Being a Water-Type, Nalu, her partner Pokémon has a selection of water based moves.

Mama Bear:

A Mother to Her Men: She values her Pokémon team as family as much as she values them as her friends.

Nice Hat: In the AU, she wears a blue newspaper boy hat inspired by @lexieluthor1998.

She Cleans Up Nicely:

Shrinking Violet: She shows some shades of this during her introduction on her first day of school in Mrs. Kay’s class until Mrs. Kay sent out her Galarian Rapidash to provide emotional support.

Signature Mon: Nalu the Primarina.

Squee!: She inwardly geeked out and fawned over petting Leon’s Charizard when he encouraged her to do so when the Fire-Type leaned in for her attention.

Katie: (thinking while a little thought bubble of a Chibi version of herself was flailing her arms around, crying Tears of Joy) I’m petting Leon’s Charizard! I’m petting Leon’s Charizard!

Tomboy:

Tomboy with a Girly Girl Streak: While she’s among a trio of tomboys in her friend group, Katie has a soft spot for cute things, likes bracelets and necklaces, and she’s not above wearing a dress on formal occasions, as long as they don’t make her like an oversized cupcake as Rachel would put it.

Try Not to Cry:

Water is Womanly: Her starter and Signature Mon is the Water-Type, Popplio she names Nalu, who will eventually evolve into the beautiful Primarina.
