Grow Beach, a club on campus, is "a branch of ASI that promotes sustainability and organic-based growing." Today at noon, they began their build day for a natural garden near the Housing and Residential Life building that has been in the works for quite some time now. This article from November 2014 tells a bit more about the garden.
Since I enjoy gardening and am supportive of this installment, I was planning on attending the build day. Unfortunately, plans did not work out. Although, I do intend to visit the garden to see how it progresses and how many plots are actually being taken up by students. As stated by the article, students pay $25 per semester for a 5"x5" plot of land, where they can grow plants of their choosing. Water, tools, and soil is all provided in the cost, which is a pretty good deal, if you ask me! In addition, the article mentions that some of the plots are being saved for the 49ers Shops Dining Services, which is hopefully still true because that means organic veggies for those who dorm!
I think promoting organic gardening on campus is important for the following reasons:
1. Organic gardening reminds us where our food comes from and how wonderful this planet is (to be able to provide us with the necessary nutrition needed to live).
2. Self-sustenance. We can grow our own food, and it's fun too!
3. Relaxing. Gardening is a good way to take a break from studying and work and all the mayhem college students experience. Plus, being out in the sun so often will give your body a good dose of vitamin D!
4. Whole, natural foods. Americans often indulge in processed and/or fast foods that aren't necessarily beneficial to the body. Growing our own food is not only rewarding in the sense that we've literally grown our own food, but also because it's natural, healthy, and tasty!
I'm excited for this garden, and I'm excited to see who else is excited.
