It was a very emotional Sunday in Zapeio. We had the Greece Race for the Cure today, an annual charity event for the battle against cancer.
Autumn sort of arrived out of the blue the other day, and I say out of the blue because on the 22 September I woke up at 4am because it was too hot! At dusk today it was raining buckets and I was thinking if this continues the race will be off. But then I remembered that Athens has this wicked arrangement with the weather, no matter how bad it rains it always stops in time for big events like all those mass protests against the crises.
And so it was today. It was a chilly, but dry day, some sun even occured right at the beginning of the race. Perfect weather for running. There were more than 15.000 people registered for the 5k run and the 2k walk. I've never done races and I always loved the idea of running around Athens, and this one was for such an important cause so I decided to register for the 5k race....
It was lovely to see so many people there in support, Zappeio was coloured pink and it was more beautiful than ever- and I spent most of 2014 there for the Greek presidency. Listening to all the women that beat cancer was incredibly inspirational and emotional, personally I was trying to hold back the tears both during their speeches and during then run when I was seeing all the messages of support on people's backs, running for their mothers, friends, girlfriends..... I can only say I know it's not much, but I am glad I did it
