These small mammals, whose scales are coveted for use in Chinese medicine, are now among the world’s most trafficked wild animals.⁠ •⁠ All four African species of pangolins are threatened with extinction. A total of 126 individual lion sightings were recorded at Singita Grumeti last month.⁠ •⁠ This remarkable number is especially significant when one considers that, at the beginning of the 21st century, it was a near-barren wilderness. A combination of uncontrolled illegal hunting, rampant wildfires and spreading stands of invasive alien vegetation had severely depressed resident wildlife numbers.⁠ •⁠ When the Grumeti Fund - Singita's conservation partner in Tanzania - took over the management of this area in 2003, they began the process of rehabilitating the land to create more hospitable environment for its natural inhabitants.
