Do people even still like Hogwarts!klaine?

Throwing my two cents into the Kurt Hummel hogwarts house debate...

I’ve always treated the house one is sorted into as the house whos characteristics the child values the most. Hence Harry asking for Gryffindor (thus proving he valued bravery more) and Draco (who isn’t particularly cunning or ambitious) who values Slytherin as that is what he has always been told is supreme. And the most obvious example being Hermione with her literal quote in book one about how knowledge is not as valuable as bravery in her eyes.

Slytherin, my own house, is what for a long time I believed Kurt was. But then I started writing this post. Kurt is very ambitions and cunning, however his value on those traits? Very little. In fact I would go as far to say his values would place him in Hufflepuff before Slytherin. Kurt sees how Rachel and Santana (both absolutely Slytherin no arguments) treat others around them and doesn’t always agree or like it. When Blaine tells the warblers that Kurt will be the duet partner without audition Kurt immediately asks about others having a chance. No Slytherin would do that. Kurt may love Rachel but when he is fighting her it’s usually over her ambition going too far. In Audition he and Mercedes are horrified by how Rachel scares off sunshine. He doesn’t value the deviousness of her plan even to object to the content of it. Kurt hated how Sebastian acted and treated others around him (very unslytherin of him because us Slytherins can appreciate our enemies plans even when we hate them so much) and even refuses to take action with Santana.

Kurt is so so brave. He faces that school and everyone who has hurt him every day with determination. And he doesn’t just value bravery in others, he expects it. During prom Queen he expects Dave to use the opportunity to come out because that’s what he would have done. He never really understands that his level of bravery is not common. Until Blaine showed up he had trouble finding someone who would be “just as brave as you are” (Burt Hummel Duets). He stands up to authority (Britney/Brittany, Bad Reputation, and others) and is somewhat disappointed when others around him don’t do the same. Not to mention the chivalry demonstrated by letting Sebatian off the hook. If you look at most of the series he seems like a cut and dry Gryffindor.

However I acknowledge that no one is a cut and dry anything. Kurt is ambitious, but he refuses to even put his ambitions above his family (Wheels). I think Kurt would be a particularly tough placement for the hat. I could go even as far as to say a hatstall. You can legitimately make an argument for any of the houses. But I do think that “Better be... GRYFFINDOR!”

Why Kurt Hummel is a Gryffindor

This is a reaction post to @klainetrashnumberone’s post on why she thinks Kurt is a Slytherin. 

(Disclaimer: I’m personally not a very big fan of Slytherin house. I think it really depends on your own experiences with the houses where you sort your favourite characters. I am also really not trying to offend anyone else with other beliefs) 

I think there are good arguments to defend both houses. I get where you are coming from when you say Kurt is a Slytherin. But!!! Though all the reasons why you think Kurt is a Slytherin do fit his personality, they are not his most dominant characteristics. Yes, he is sneaky and cunning and ambitious and all those things. I would never say he isn't. But the main reason why I see him as a Gryffindor and not as a Slytherin is because morally he would always go for for the good for most people and not just for himself and the people close to him. 

Slytherins are more likely to dismiss others feelings to achieve their goals. Kurt isn’t like this. He is the most selfless person in the world. He will never do something if it’d mean hurting someone else. He also would never think less of a person for being less cool or poor or anything. (The blood purity part of Slytherin house bothers me) 

Take Santana for instance. A true Slytherin. Her and Kurt have very similar traits in their personality. However! Santana is loyal to few people that have earned her trust. Her sense of what’s right is more limited to her direct environment. She is willing to put herself first in situations.

Yes, Kurt is loyal to his loved ones, but it doesn’t end there. Kurt wants whats right for everyone. Take his strong fight against bullying when he ran for class president for example. He has a fundamental sense of what is right.

Slytherins are more likely to do something for their own good and not take someone else’s feelings in consideration. Kurt always thinks of how his actions would effect others. 

Also, you say he always thinks before he acts. He doesn’t jump right into things. Well, when he is put under pressure he can jump into things head first without thinking about it because he feels its the right thing to do. Take “Bash” for example. I have never seen a more Gryffindor thing in my life. He sees something that isn’t right so he just acts. Another moment you or choosing “not the boy next door” as his audition song. 

Yes Kurt makes snarky comments, but so does Harry. 

Your sense of humor or quips don’t put you in a certain house. The way you treat the people around you, your moral compass and the intentions/motivations to your actions do.

Kurt Hummel - The Gryffindor

I’m just gonna say it, already said it in the title. Kurt Hummel is a Gryffindor and now I’ll tell you why, in a single word.

Bash.

Bash ruined everything because I was against this sorting for a long long time, mainly because I’m a Slytherin and therefore I wanted Kurt to be in my house, but he’s not and I have to admit that because of that stupid episode.

Slytherin’s are not particularly self sacrificing for people they don’t know, especially when it can very much affect themselves and their loved ones without the chance of them getting anything really good out of it. Slytherin’s weigh their choices carefully (and quickly, we’re clever) before going about doing anything that could endanger us.

Do you know what Kurt definitely doesn’t do in Bash? Think. Contemplate. Calculate. If Kurt was a Slytherin he would have stopped by that alley, saw the three(four?) huge guys, and recognized that he would not be able to beat them on his own and that he could likely die. And then he’d think of how that would affect his friends and family, devastated fiance, father and stepmother just lost one son, am I going to make the lose another? Rachel just lost her soulmate, now I’m going to be an idiot and let myself get killed so she loses her best friend too? HELL NO, I’ll call the cops, that’s the best I can do.

But no he runs in and nearly get himself killed, because he’s too self-sacrificing and brash, like a Gryffindor.

Prompt: Can you maybe write some more Harry Potter!Klaine

 “Excuse me?” A soft voice made Kurt’s head snap up from his magazine. “Can…can I stay in this compartment with you?”

 The boy was rather small with a head of bouncy curls and huge hazel eyes. He was wearing a dark blue argyle sweater vest and neat grey jeans. The bright purple bow tie caught Kurt’s attention and he nodded quickly. 

 “Thanks,” the boy gave him a toothy grin. “The compartments are all super full and I saw that you were alone. I’m Blaine by the way.”

 “Kurt,” he nodded at him and hurried to move his things aside. 

 Blaine took a seat, groaning slightly as he finally got off his feet. “What year are you?”

 “First,” Kurt shrugged and the boy perked up. 

 “Me too! Sorry, I’m so, so nervous. No one in my family is magical and we were just so confused when we got the visit. Who knew right?” Blaine rambled on and Kurt found himself smiling. “I mean…just walking through Diagon Alley was amazing. I can’t wait to learn everything at school!”

 “I’m pretty excited too,” Kurt sat up a little straighter. “My parents were both Gryffindors, so were my grandparents and great-grandparents and so on. I’m…actually a bit nervous I won’t get into Gryffindor.”

 Blaine’s smile faded a little. “I…don’t even know what that is.”

 “Okay, so there are four houses at Hogwarts,” Kurt started to explain and Blaine nodded, looking hungry for the information. “There’s Gryffindor which is the house of the brave and daring. Ravenclaw is the house of the wise. Hufflepuff is the house of the loyal and just, and Slytherin is the house of the ambitious. You get sorted when you get there for the first time by a hat.”

 “A hat?” Blaine raised his eyebrows.

 “Yeah! It like…can tell who you really are and stuff,” Kurt nodded. 

 “All the houses sound pretty good,” Blaine said thoughtfully but Kurt noticed his hands were twisting together nervously. 

 “Some people think there are bad parts of the houses too. Gryffindors are reckless, Ravenclaws are arrogant, Hufflepuffs are too trusting, and Slytherins can be cruel,” Kurt numbered them off on his fingers. “But they’re your home and your family.”

 Blaine nodded before giving him a shy smile. “I hope we’re in the same house.”

 “Me too,” Kurt smiled. 

 The rest of the train ride flew off as they chatted and laughed over treats from the trolley. Kurt had been terrified to go to Hogwarts. The kids he knew from other magical families bullied him and taunted him constantly which was why he hid in the back of the train. Blaine was kind to him and Blaine was quickly becoming his first real friend. 

 As they dismounted the train and piled into the boats Blaine went quiet. His face paled and his eyes were huge and terrified as they approached the huge castle. He fidgeted in his robes and glanced over to Kurt as he gently squeezed his hand. 

 “It’ll be okay,” he tried to comfort the other boy.

 “This is why you’re getting put in Gryffindor,” Blaine whispered as they waited for the doors to the Great Hall to open. “You’re so courageous.”

 The doors swung open before Kurt could respond and they followed the crowd into the room. The first years were completely silent as the ancient hat was placed on the stool. The hat said a little poem and then the stern looking woman who had spoken to them started calling names. 

 Five names were called before Blaine was called and he turned ashen white, squeezing Kurt’s hand once more before shakily walking to the stool. Kurt watched with baited breath as Blaine’s eyes widened and shot up. The hat sat on his head for a good few minutes before it finally roared out a house. 

 “HUFFLEPUFF!”

 The moment of disappointment was masked by happiness as Kurt clapped for his friend. Blaine’s face split into a wide grin and he hopped down to his table of cheering housemates. 

 It didn’t take long before Kurt’s name was called as well and he felt his heart stutter in his chest. The walk to the stage felt like a million miles and his feet felt almost leaden as he approached it. When the hat was placed on his head, it sank down over his eyes. 

 “Another Hummel? I just keep getting more and more of you,” a voice said in his ear. “But where to put you?”

 “Gryffindor please, please,” Kurt thought desperately. 

 “To make daddy proud? That’s so sweet,” the voice was almost condescending. “You wouldn’t want to be with your new little friend in Hufflepuff?”

 Kurt hesitated. “I…that could be okay.”

 “Let’s see Kurt Hummel. You are ambitious and would do well in Slytherin. You are intelligent and would do well in Ravenclaw. You are loyal and would do well in Hufflepuff. However, are you brave?”

 “Yes.”

 The hat was silent for a few moments and Kurt’s heart jumped. “You’re an interesting boy Kurt Hummel. You’re courageous but don’t let yourself see it. Soon enough you’ll find that inspiration and then nothing will stop you. You belong in GRYFFINDOR!”

 The hat was pulled off his head and he saw the table of red and gold standing and cheering. Without another though, Kurt hurried to them and beamed as they congratulated him. The rest of the students were sorted quickly and then the food appeared, looking so amazing that Kurt’s mouth watered. He glanced up to the yellow and black table and grinned as he met Blaine’s eyes. The other boy was sitting next to a blonde boy and girl but he waved, smiling brightly. 

 By the time he was lying in his bed back in the dorms he was completely exhausted. The events of the day were overwhelming and his stomach was almost too full. Kurt’s eyes slid closed and he felt himself on the edge of sleep with only one thought in his mind.

 What did the hat mean by his inspiration to be courageous?

You know I always see a lot of posts about how people think Kurt would be in Slytherin but honestly, I have to disagree, because what house you belong to is determined by the characteristics that you VALUE not the ones you possess and Kurt has always wanted to be brave and courageous which is why I would have to put him in Gryffindor. For example in season one Acafellas when he's talking to Mercedes about coming out he's crying and says "I guess I'm just not that confident" because he wants to be that brave and eventually he is Additionally, in season two, Never Been Kissed, Kurt stands up to Karofsky "I'm not afraid of you!" It is obviously really important to him that he shows courage and stands up to his fears Also in Prom Queen he goes up and accepts his crown even though it was a cruel prank Finally, in Bashed, he takes if really hard when Rachel calls him "scared" which shows that he's worked hard to prove his bravery and values it a lot. He also saves a random person from being beaten and goes to the hospital for it. When his dad visits he calls him brave and stupid but Kurt takes it as a compliment because that is what is most important to him. I'm know Kurt is really smart and cunning, and I'm sure he values these, but I think that he would be better fitted in Gryffindor
