Bigger Friend? :
Something seemed odd about the air flow of the room that Heather looked up from her project. She had been slowly chipping away at the next little wooden decoration she had been given. It was in the shape of a mushroom, and she already cut the top off with her mother's old knife. About a third of the way down into the cap part, being alone for long stretches of time despite having a big friend got very boring.
So Heather worked on making some things into jars like she used to do with her mother. She had very rarely been allowed to leave the safe areas as her mother left to look for supplies, but was old enough to help.
Her new big friend seemed to really love it when she gave him one of the wooden mushrooms that she hollowed out into a jar. It took several days of hard work but she had gotten gentle cuddles and even a piece of his sweet thing from his…rations? He always gave her enough to eat for the day or two from his nightly meals. But that day was special.
She got some chocolate! A whole square off his bar!
Heather saved bits broken up into one of the her-sized glass jars in her new home. It was a… lunch box? Her big friend had glued a lot of soft foam padding inside, and made her an opening just big enough for her to hide inside if a scary… 'se-cure-ity' stranger came by, or the light started to flash red that meant the monsters were coming. There were even lights inside, a little string of tiny lights that seemed to be made for borrowers like her.
Her favorite things, and a present from her big friend. The other big friends that he brought sometimes to the room would give her small shiny or little jars. She had some water and food in those neat jars, as that's what her mother said to do. Always have extra food and water. Even though there was a mug of water by her… lunchbox.
Heather paused as she put the loose scrapings of wood into the bottle cap beside her, looking around as she realized it seemed warmer.
There was a vibration, something she knew by now. Drawing her attention up and really paying attention to find where the tapping came from. Heather brightened up seeing her big friend, and he had something he was setting down near her. It shined like those tasty… 'fig bars' things that were wrapped in shiny film. The tiny girl got up, tucking her mother's knife into its sheath under her shirt.
She really needed new clothes.
Maybe she could ask her big friend, he seemed so happy. Looking over his shoulder as she came over. Did he bring another big friend?
Heather squeaked happily at that, as well as seeing the familiar green fig wrapper. She liked it when her protector brought new friends, as long as they did not grab her! Most just gave her very light headpets and presents. Sometimes food, those jars, the wood mushrooms- one time someone with red hair gave Heather her-sized bowls!!
The big shadow that was behind her big friend moved, starting Heather that she dropped down… and dropped the awkward fig bar package that it landed in her lap. The only light in the room was still coming from the lamp on her desktop. Her new safe space that she had to stay in.
This stranger was… so big!
Even bigger than her big friend! By a lot, her human was just barely up to other's chest!
She hopes he was nice, having a bigger big friend would be so neat!
Her big human friend was talking to the bigger one too fast for Heather to keep up trying to read his face. She shifted to get the fig bars off her, then started at the sense of mass moving.
She almost thought a broken box had been set over her. Heather stared at the massive walls of gray and some green around her, making a soft worried sound as she could not grasp right away that it was two massive hands that were slowly wrapping her up into them. Each thick finger was bigger than her in mass and length. She looked around so confused as a thick digit touched her head.
That was when she realized it was a massive thumb touching her. But it was oddly such a light pressure smoothing down the side of her head, to her shoulder and then back. Even her big…. Small? Human friend was not this consistently gentle. Heather thought it was because she was so small and him so big.
The girl looked around the massive walls now wrapped around and under her. Palms.
They were warm, titanic palms that held her, and Heather looked up, and up, and up to find…. Robot? Armor? A mirror? She thought it was something like the armor and helmets of those she was supposed to hide from. Just different enough that she was not scared.
This bigger giant was both so gentle with her, and…warm. He felt oddly safe as one large pad of a covered finger was pressed lightly over Heather's whole back. The girl was not aware there was a sensor in the massive gloves. She just gave a little wiggle to use the small edges of the glove to get at an itchy spot.
Heather started to turn, her tiny hands spread over the edge on the big thumb beside her.
This new friend was so big…!
Even though she did not like being normally picked up by humans, this one was so gentle. His hands warm around her so much it blocked the chill of the room. It was something about how he was gentle, though Heather could not grasp what. She still responded to being treated like a child that she was, wanting attention, not as a novelty.
The bigger big human rumbled then, and she blinked, not hearing it per say. But felt the sound that seemed to vibrate through his armor and gloves. It got her to giggle, smiling as her back was rubbed now instead of the steady touch.
She liked this human, Heather had no idea why as they just met. Yet she did like this stranger. Though she did make a startled huff as she was lifted up closer towards this giant's body.
Both massive hands were cupping around Heather, cradling her as if protecting rather than to show her to a new friend. Those big fingers rubbed her back and side again before she was shifted into one large hand.
"Ah?" Heather made a confused sound without realizing it, then got a glimpse of how far the ground was.
This human was really tall…
She held tight to his thumb, a little frightened at the height, but then was being brought even closer to the impossibly wide plate of armor that was on his chest. The other hand not holding her reached to dig in or under, triggered the chest plate to loosen and before anyone could react, Heather or her original human protector, she was slid inside.
The girl stopped sliding down as she grabbed at black fabric of some sort as it curved. Was she in a bag? Or a pocket? It felt like she was in a pocket again, that had happened to her once or twice. Did humans have pockets on their chests and under shirts or armor normally?
Then the world turned dark, the little sliver of light from above was blocked as there was a sense of pressure from the armor as it resealed with a hiss of air. Heather wiggled, confused to say the least as the big chest under and behind her took a slow breath that moved her. She was only somewhat squished with each breath he took after, but found a spot to sit in this strange pocket in the middle of the big-big human’s chest.
Heather gasped as she could feel a new vibration of the human’s beating heartbeat. It was so strong seemingly, and despite herself wiggled to turn around and hesitantly pressed the side of her head against the fabric. Eyes closed in the dark to listen to the heartbeat and the rise and fall of breathing that moved her a bit. Then there was a low, steady rumbling from this massive human that vibrated through Heather. Like some sort of magic, it seemed to echo in her little bones.
…was he purring?
Humans purred?!
Why did no one tell her?! Not even her mom told her!
Was this some sort of human thing? A greeting or something like that? Her mother thought humans were so very strange, was this why? Heather had been held and gently cuddled against her current protecting human, and some of the big friends that came by. Those women were really nice to her, but also held her close to their chest and she could hear their heart.
…was this bigger-big human a woman too? They had a big chest like those she had met! Just… it was dark, and the chest with the armor seemed really big.
Or was being held against a human’s chest that normal for them?
Heather was so confused.
Yet as the human shifted, she was aware of the movements given her size. She grasped at the fabric around her, but there was just enough space for a few wiggles. It was rapidly heating up, and the girl found how she could be supported and leaned against the vibration the big-big human made. It was so much warmer than the room, even under her blankets in her bed inside the lunch box. If possible the little one seemed to relax, ‘listening’ to the heartbeat. That steady beat was far more effective at getting the tiny girl to become sleepy than any little pets from her (former?) human guardian.
This was nice.
Very, very strange but it was also nice to be against living warmth, almost like being held and hugged. Just… odd, but humans were really odd right? Heather felt safe, still very confused as she dosed, but safe!
Was she being taken somewhere? The big-big human seemed to be walking, but she was in juuust right spot that there was not as much secondary movement. Not being shaken up in that way when having to be in a pocket or jacket pocket.
Heather woke up and fell asleep several times as this giant human seemed to go about his (or her!) day. But whenever heather shifted and wiggled there was a low vibration again, and something like a tap on the metal overtop of her. Did her human ask this one to keep her hidden?
That would make sense of why she was not let out, but she was starting to get hungry. Heather wiggled, turning and moving to grasp at the fabric against this giant human’s chest side. Tugging and pushing as much as she could, trying to get attention from someone so much bigger than her.
Heather was thirsty and hungry- she did not even eat any of her fig bar present! And the girl would need to relieve herself soon, it had to have been a few hours at least of being stuck in this dark, warm pocket place. She did not want to be so rude to have an accident.
There was a different type of vibration that came out of the giant she was stuck with. Something almost like scraping and then strong tap over top of her on the other side of the armor. It had to be so many inches away!
The girl pushed at the big chest again. “Ah!”
The world dipped, gravity shifting as the giant just… got up from where he had been sitting, half paying attention to the humans outside. Not that Heather knew that, just that she was dizzy for a few moments and then everything was moving again. Then Heather became aware of a tingling sensation that made her feel sick before who was caring for her in their odd human chest pocket was feeling over and started to loosen the heavy chest plate.
Heather made a startled sound at the flush of cool air that came in with a sliver of light. Should she try to climb up?
The armor was pulled back more than when she was first put in, almost barely enough space for her to fit then. Now it was big enough for one of those massive hands to reach in and, again, gently wrapped around her in the pocket of fabric and lifted the girl out.
Heather found the edge of the pocket, made another startled sound at the light and almost cold air compared to where she had been. Pulling the edge of the fabric right back up and over her shoulders. The girl looked around, finding herself on a large palm again, the exact same gray textured one from before her time hiding with the new friend. She blinked up at the giant and it took a moment for her to realize she was not staring at a helmet or mirror-like visor.
The giant of a human seemed male, his face was scarred and seemed harsh but also… neutral. Bright green eyes peering back at her, they almost seemed to glow as he was pushing his armor back into place. That massive hand was lifting to gently cup around Heather in her little pocket-bag, one large finger tip rubbing on her back and side with almost no pressure as he started to walk.
He glanced up to the ceiling for some reason and then back down, head tilting to his right for a moment. Heather found herself blinking back and mirroring the bigger-big human without thinking, to tilt her head in the same direction.
It did not seem like he was talking, she could not read his face like when others talked, and looked around. It… was so big, not like the room she had been staying in, not the desk. It made Heather a bit dizzy and she had to hold onto the large thumb beside her.
She was still thirsty.
“A…ag…” how was that sound made that meant water? She did not have the note paper anywhere near her. Heather looked up at those green eyes and lifted her hands to pretend drinking out of her cup.
The giant blinked, and then seemed to straighten up. He looked away from her and then walked across the just as massive room. Heather had no idea what everything was, but it was really shiny here!
The massive hands moved and Heather was gently settled on a smooth, flat surface. The warm palms cupped around her again, as if not sure she would run or just fall over. Heather squeaked as she sort of just… flopped into a new spot to sit, hugging the still warm fabric around her. Heather looked up, and after a moment where the bigger-big human seemed confused he lifted his hands away from the tiny being.
Heather mimed drinking again.
It seemed like there was a flicker of a smile on the puzzled, big face before he stood up. Hesitated a moment and made a motion with his left hand, palm down and motioned as if pushing down. Was he trying to tell her to stay?
Could this biggest human not talk or hear too?
Heather had no ideas humans could not hear or talk! She tucked in, looking all around and seemed like she was on another desk, or table. Not leaving the area of the pocket-bag, but rapidly found that if she reached out and touched the almost glass like surface, she made an excited sound.
It sparkled!
The black around her fingers shimmered to blue and left a line of sparkly blue behind!
Thrilled, the girl sat up and reached out to draw at first random shapes, and then the few numbers she knew. She could count to ten now! And tried to write letters, swirls and little patterns, quickly and fully distracted enough she did not even notice when the giant came back.
She was not aware of the big human kneeling down behind her, beside the pretty table top, his shadow was away from her. Then there was a sense of air movement before there was a vibration through the tabletop 'ground.'
That was something Heather was used to, looking up at the way her (old?) human guardian got her attention when distracted. She looked up and around, leaving tiny handprints on the glowing table. The bigger-big human looked bemused as he scanned what she had done. He had pulled off his gloves while gone, not that it kept his hands from seeming any less titanic.
He set what looked like a bottle cap half full of water beside Heather. That almost smile flickering as she made a happy sound and settled to lift the cap and start to sip. Grateful it was not full so she could pick it up without spilling.
Did this giant human know others that were small like her?
Heather felt better after drinking, but shook her head when that lid was tapped. Offering it back by sitting the cap on his finger tip. If she drank too much she would need to go even more! Still had to go, but before trying to figure out how to get that across. Those big hands were already closing around her again after the cap was taken back somewhere below the table top.
His palms were just as warm as before with the gloves, even through the fabric of the pocket-bag. Heather reached up to grasp one large finger, finding the human was letting the girl pull the digit to look at a thick scar that webbed over his forefinger and around the back of his knuckles. She was not scolded, if anything the big digits cradling Heather were relaxed. It seemed like he was letting her be nosy and look his hands over.
The giant human slowed and entered another big room, but it smelled like… plants!
Heather wiggled excitedly, so very happy to see green growing things again, it seemed like she was even smaller when-
She made the happiest of sounds at recognizing one of the bigger plants that was growing. Enough so that the giant human paused and turned, gently holding her close to it for Heather to grab at blueberries!
Heather felt so happy and suddenly sad as she grabbed at the big berries, getting a whole six sitting in the curve between her and a crease in the human’s palm. She missed her mom, they’re old home used to be under and behind a blueberry bush. It was so nice there, even if her mother had to keep burning spider webs in the bush. Heather missed fresh blueberries, her old human used to only now and then give her one or two frozen ones. Sometimes a candied one from his… pie?
With her mother’s old knife, Heather was distracted by pulling a blueberry into her lap and cutting into it. Happy to eat the now seeming rare treat.
Maybe… maybe this new human would let her make blueberry jerky? She remembered how to do it!
Was this her new protector? Would he give her back to the other human, Heather was not sure, but she greedily ate the blueberry with all the excitement of a child that had not had a comfort food in so long.
The big hands were lowering, settling on the earth of a different growing bed for plants, and she looked up.
The big hands were lowering, settling on the earth of a different growing bed for plants, and she looked up. It was another blueberry bush, but not as big, and something she sort of remembered. It took a second and a little bit of a nudge from the large thumb for her to scoot to step off the big hand. That pocket-bag was set down near her and Heather looked relieved as her berries were set on the fabric, including the half eaten one.
The bigger… biggest human? He was crouching down to be able to see her better. He seemed happier? Those bright green eyes softer maybe as he made that same motion with a flat hand as if asking her to stay here. Glanced around and reached down as he stood. Heather realized that the cap from before was attached to a water bottle half in a pocket outside of his armor!
She looked around and sat on the edge of the fabric, peering up at the giant human. Watching with wide eyes as he looked between her and the water bottle. Taking the cap off to set on the fabric near Heather. She was amazed as he took a large gulp of the water, lowering the level in the bottle before pulling an knife out of… no where? Somewhere in the air shimmered.
The giant cut the bottle just above the new water level, setting it near. Not unlike the low tea cup that her old human had in the desk. Then once more motioned for Heather to stay put.
Heather looked around, puzzled. Was this like the desk? A new safe spot? She stared intently at the blueberry bush, making sure there were no spiders up in there, or in the other bush beside her. The space seemed about the same as the desk top, little bigger… longer!
The girl looked back up at the giant human, who seemed a little worried now. Heather lifted her hands, her mother’s knife in her lap, stained with blueberry juice. She spread her hands out flat, and tried to mime the same motion. Heather did not mind staying here for now!
The human gave that faint smile again, spreading his hand to that ‘stay’ motion one more time, hesitated and then reached down. The massive hand coming close, hesitated and then gave Heather a soft touch to the top of her head. She wiggled happily at the attention, slightly disappointed that the warm hand lifted and he was starting to back up. Leaving her alone after a last, puzzled look to the ceiling.
Heather looked up, was there a really big spider up there?
Once she was alone, and seemed to be completely alone, the girl got up and ran under the blueberry bush. Trying to find the perfect spot to hide and relieve herself.
Now she could have some more water!
Heather looked around, getting the cap of water and set it down before flopping happily on the black fabric. This was amazing! It smelled so nice in this new place, of growing green things! The girl paused and blinked, leaning down to sniff the black fabric. It smelled a bit like salt and… something that was vaguely familiar. It was not the same as what other humans smelled like sometimes.
Not as stinky, still a smell, but not… bad?
Heather peered over and reached for the other half of her blueberry. Sitting up to eat happily. There seemed to be a lot of things growing here! Not just in this spot, there were other big, long tables of growing things. Mostly things that seemed like they could be found in that big garden yard Heather and her mother used to live by.
Just enough time passed that she was starting to get bored, as much as she wanted to explore more than around the blueberry bush. She sort of promised to stay put.
The girl reached out to pick up the ripest of the blueberries. One that bruised under her fingers. Cutting the berry up into the cap with some water and trying not to be too messy. It was not the same as what her mother did, but she had a nice berry soup-juice to sip while waiting. Heather finished that and sprawled on the black fabric underneath the bush.
Heather dosed at first, settled into a nap and then finally into a deeper proper sleep. Being carried around under a giant's armor, even with napping it was a lot of confusing but subtle muscle work the girl was not used to. Right now Heather was full with three whole blueberries and it was peaceful. Some sort of background sound she was not really aware of.
She was not aware of massive hands gently picking her up with the fabric. The girl only tried to subconsciously snuggle into the warm palm that supported her. Her last three berries were not forgotten as the giant looked down at the little one in his hands with an almost lost expression.
