GTA Centre can be privately funded
An NHL sized rink in Markham is proposed and can be funded by a private investor. This rink will be called the GTA Centre, the city of Markham would no longer need to borrow $325 million any more. "Nothing really has changed", says Regional Councillor Jim Jones, "The new financial framework doesn't mention developer fees from constructing the building or property taxes to the city", he added. The GTA centre is proposed multi-purposed NHL sized arena in downtown Markham, promoters say that they will welcome more than 130 events annually including entertainment, world-class sports, large-scale productions and theatre style shows.
I feel that if there is demand for this large arena then go for it, but if only minimal demand for this rink then I think it is too big and expensive for the project. Most city councilmen disagreed with this rink but now private investors/sponsors want to fund it it might be possible. I believe that the GTA Centre is a great idea since it is in the heart of downtown and will bring lots of money to the city, but it is quite costly.
