Key Points

Alastor Moody was practically destined to be an auror from the first moment he opened his eyes. Both of his parents, Pierson & Holland were aurors, as well as several other members of his family. He was given his grandfather’s wand after his passing and began practicing long before other children. His parents would often teach him dueling tactics and defensive spells. 

Alastor knew he had to study hard to get the grades he needed to be an auror. He took his future very seriously and wasn’t much of a jokester during school. He had friends, though he wasn’t overly friendly to many people. He did find himself in detention quite often for his inability to stand down from a fight or challenge. During his seventh year, his father was involved in an ambush attack that left him unable to perform his auror duties. Alastor knew that this meant he had to push himself even harder.

Auror training hadn’t been difficult for Moody, who had been taught and told what would be expected of him. His mother retired her position shortly after Alastor joined the department. He excelled at bringing in dark wizards, quickly working his way up through the ranks. With a war brewing, Alastor is next in line for the Head Auror position.

Background:

The number of peers and professors who have been able to identify with James throughout his years at Hogwarts is appalling. Something about his discontent, and his vivid way of expressing it, makes him resonate powerfully with the people around him. Even if they’ve grown up from a completely different background. 

James was brought up in a household not much different than anybody else’s. A stable family life, keeping him grounded and sane. Raised with a silver spoon in his mouth, James never had to worry about his families financial standing. A clean, glossed over life with a pristine coating. Everybody liked James because he was charming and admirable, wealthy and talented. But there’s a dark side to everybody’s life.

It was tempting for James to revel in his cantankerousness rather than try to deduce what could ever be wrong with him. The obvious signs that he was troubled came about during his third year at Hogwarts. He began to fail his lessons, ones he once cared deeply about; he was hospitalized for instability after getting terrible grades on his OWLS, and visited by a psychoanalyst to help diagnose his fevered mind; and he is unable to connect with other people.

James is well aware of the trauma he was subjected to, but doesn’t know how to move on from it. The death of his youngest brother happened during a Quidditch incident during James’s second year at school. People around Hogwarts still gossiped about it, spilling their thoughts behind his back.

His lack of motivation sets him behind his schoolmates. But the adoration people harbor for James makes him a cherished and special part of the Hogwarts community.
