Welcome to part 1 of The Challenge. What’s following is the first part of a 10 (or more) part series focusing on getting to know your character deeper than you have before. This first section will be covering the basics, and will presume you’re either starting from scratch or have a limited knowledge of your character. a place to write this down (paper, a tumblr post, evernote, microsoft word etc.)

Today we’re going to be covering the basics of your character, and give yourself a place to branch off from. These include their name, age, birthday, and the likes. We will, however, be delving in deeper than just these basics. Your task is very simple. Simply answer the following questions in as much detail as you can.
Their Name
What is your character’s first name?
What does this name mean?
Who gave your character this name?
Why were they given this name?
Do they like their name?
If not, what name would they prefer?
Does your character have a middle name?
If so, what is your characters middle name?
What does this name mean?
Why were they given this name?
What is your characters last name?
Do they like their last name?
Would they like to change it when they get married?
Have they had any other last names? (Through marriage, divorce, etc.)
Does your character ever shorten their name?
Their Age
How old is your character?
Do they act older, younger, or their age?
Do they like being their age, or do they wish they were older or younger?
Their Birthday
What date is their birthday?
What year were they born in?
What week day were they born on?
What time were they born?
What is their star sign?
Do they like their birthday?
How did they celebrate their birthday as a child?
How do they celebrate their birthday now?
Where were they born?
Their Hometown
Where did they grow up?
Did they move house growing up?
What was their childhood home(s) like? (House, apartment. Owned, rented. How many rooms etc.)
Did they get along with their neighbours?
Did they go to a school nearby?
What was their hometown like? (Cute village, Big city etc.)
Their Occupation
What is their job?
Where do they work? (Example: If they are a barista, which coffee shop do they work at. If they’re a lawyer, what firm do they work for? etc. etc.)
Do they work for themselves or for an employer?
Is this what they want to be doing?
What is their dream job?
How much money do they make?
Do they enjoy working there?
Their Nicknames
Does your character like nicknames?
Do they have any nicknames given by parents or family members?
Do they have any nicknames given by friends?
Do they have any nicknames given by their partner?
Do they have any work related nicknames? (For example, publishing a book under a different name.)
Do they have any childhood / current nicknames given by a bully?
Are there any nicknames / pet names (babe, sweetheart etc.) that your character hates?
And that’s it for part one! If you’ve managed to complete all of this, congratulations! Even if these are just basics, these questions should’ve really got you thinking. Today we’re going to be looking at the motivation behind your character. What makes them do the things they do? Your task is very simple. As before, simply answer the following questions, in as much detail as you possibly can. Really dig into their history for this task.
What is their primary motivation?
Their family? Love? Career? Revenge?
What is their secondary motivation?
This isn’t their leading motivator, but it’s something that pushes them to do what they do.
Why does this motivate them? What is it about this thing that makes them get out of bed in the morning and do the things they have to do.
Was there a defining moment in their life that gave them this motivation?
Why do they want to get revenge? Why are they so desperate to find love? Why do they want this career so badly?
What would their life be like if they weren’t motivated by this?
