Ghost Swap! Prompt for @azurefishnets with a free square for FFVI AU. I could have sworn you prompted it too, @laughingmango, but we’ll just say it’s a year late! Or something. Little AU time anyway baby.
Cabanela leaned back against Blanca to stare at the sky. Stars glittered and shone in a far different display than when he'd last been in the area. His hand idly drifted over the grass beside him—another obvious change—it really was a new world once more, and a far more exciting one to explore. Lying under the night sky pillowed against Blanca while the air was only pleasantly cool instead of the stale chill of before was far more comfortable than he would have once imagined.
He gave a small laugh. To think he'd once been in a huff about being assigned to Figaro, somewhere clearly in the 'boonies', castle or not, and now here he was truly roughing it and finding this peace in it.
Of course, as it turned out, he had been shockingly wrong about Figaro.
And what about now, the thought rose unbidden. Was he wrong again?
He sighed. No, he knew the answer to that. The right choice didn't always feel good, but it felt right. He'd steered himself wrong before but not this time.
Not this time.
Blanca warbled as she turned her head to peer around at him.
"It's nothin', baby."
He focused on the stars. They would see this same sight. For a moment he indulged himself in the image of them on the parapets, the sky sparkling above … soft words, a warmth, a probable joke in there … familiarity.
And he lay the thought and memory gently to the side. Not buried, simply … preserved.
One day. Maybe one day when the shadows faded.
He reached back to scritch Blanca's feathers. He breathed in the scent of grass and chocobo, and let his eyes slide shut. They would set off again in the morning, to where, he hadn't quite decided yet—something as novel as the peace currently surrounding them—and let sleep claim him.

Summary: Alone, Jowd travels on in a ruined world
Jowd found Cabanela on the deck, where he seemed to spend the majority of his time now since they found the Vanguard. He sat on the railing and the wind ruffled his hair and coat. Two thoughts struck Jowd—one: it didn’t look comfortable and two: he was having a hard time looking away from the sight; he looked… free. A third thought followed the first two: he looked like a stiff wind could blow him away, and with that thought he was reminded of why he was looking for him in the first place.
He cleared his throat. Cabanela turned, still delicately balanced on the rail.
“Come to joooin me, baby?”
“Rather if you’re joining,” me, “us. There’s dinner, the last of Sissel’s catch and a few other things.” Odds and ends at this point. Memry was angling them for another supply stop and, in her hopeful plans, an old friend of hers who it seemed would improve their culinary prospects.
“I’m comin’.”
“Are you?” Jowd asked before he stop himself. “I doubt Cidgeon will approve of you missing another one.” Yes, that was easier than saying what was really on his mind: you’re too thin. Too much like a shadow…
He expected Cabanela to brush off the remark with careless ease as always; he didn’t expect the flicker of confusion in his face first. Had he really forgotten? Cabanela hopped down from the railing coming to float just a tiny bit off the deck, almost unnoticeably.
And there was the careless shrug. “I was busy. Time slipped by.” He bit off the word.
Jowd clenched a hand. Part of him wanted to reach out, to feel his presence and reassure…himself? Him? Cabanela watched him, always watching… Jowd abruptly turned away, ignored the soft exhale and resolutely started his way back to the ladder. He could still feel his gaze, hungry, all-consuming… no, not from him. Merely watchful. And yet, still too much.
As he walked away there was the slightest tap like that of shoes hitting the wooden deck, then steps and Cabanela came up to walk beside him. They moved in silence and there was something oddly comforting in it. However, too soon they reached the ladder and Jowd let Cabanela go ahead. He hesitated as Cabanela disappeared below deck and wondered when their lives might make some kind of sense before he laughed at himself for the notion and followed after him.
