Color Guard tips from a graduated captain
- Drink. Water. Seriously, it’s not the end of the world if you need to get water. Your team would rather you take a 2 minute break than pass out during practice
- Please don’t try to learn rifle or sabre without an instructor. One girl sprained her wrist from a rifle and another nearly got a concussion from one. It’s just not a good idea. Plus, you’re probably learning the wrong form.
- If you’re ever confused about drill, choreography, or tosses, please don’t hesitate to ask another teammate, captain, or instructor! I promise they’ll help you in whatever way they can (coming from someone who was a captain)
- Don’t actually try to hit the band members, it’s fun to joke about the point system for different band members, but don’t purposely do it.
- Help each other out on the field. If you see someone struggling, help them out!
- Go to color guard camps when you can! They’re so much fun and you’ll learn a lot. Plus you’ll meet a lot of other guard members
- Audition for different teams! Audition for college guard! I auditioned and although I didn’t make it, it was such a good experience! I would highly recommend it!
