Contrition
Bruce knew this was going to be a rough visit. Matt had been his lawyer for years and above that he’d been a good friend. They were strangers when Matt defended him in court the first time. Bruce struggled to completely accept what Matt believed about his green alter ego, but he couldn’t deny the obvious rapport between the two of them.
If Bruce could have let Matt know the truth of what was going to happen, he would have. The problem was he needed highly suspicious people to believe he was dead which meant the few people close to him had to act accordingly. He knew it was a dick move and a horrible way to repay Matt for everything he’d done for him over the years, but making Matt hold onto this secret would have been worse. Bruce hadn’t expected him to put Clint on trial. He should have, Matt was a stubborn man and he deeply believed in justice. Bruce just didn’t think even he could convince anyone to move forward with the case.
He was glad he hadn’t put Matt in a position where he was knowingly prosecuting a man for a crime he didn’t commit. Though the guilt he felt for making Matt once again fight for justice for him and lose was still worse.
Bruce’s mind went over all of these troubled thoughts as he made his way to Matt’s place. As usual he made his way to the rooftop and fished the key out of a hiding spot Matt had put it in a long time ago. He didn’t;t know if Matt forgot it or couldn’t bring himself to remove it. Once the door was unlocked he hid the key and entered Matt’s apartment.
“Matt?” he said into the darkened apartment. Just because the lights weren’t on didn’t mean Matt wasn’t there.
