Slowly, Shimura shifted so that he was facing Higuchi and crossed his legs, his back slumping forward out of habit. “If an eternity is how long we’ll be here, I don’t want to spend it stuck with everyone hating each other. Not that I think things will ever be pleasant, but they’ll at least be more tolerable if we’re not constantly at each other’s throats ... literally.”
He rested his cheek in his hand, his gaze going unfocused before slipping back to Higuchi. “And, you know ... I wouldn’t say he got off easy. You didn’t see what his condition was like, on the ship after ... after Ooi and the crew decided it was time to get rid of him.” There's the slightest hint of guilt in his voice for allowing the mutiny to take place at all, but not much; things were better this way than how they would have been if Shimura had done what he’d been planning to, if you asked him, and better than they would have been if Namikawa had remained in charge.
