How the Beast Ate Francis
It's a children's novel about a catapiller knight who goes questing to slay a beast, and ventures into the Dark Forest only to realize that the Dark Forest IS the beast, and his subsequent struggle to convince it to stop making him lost and let him out, and then finding a cave and discovering a treasure hoard and wisely turning down taking anything except a map that will lead him out, and the Dark Forest lets him go and even slips a couple treasures in his bag when he leaves.
