It was International Women’s Day yesterday, and KL was busy with a number of events and guest shifts. Decided to go for not one, but two shifts featuring former Omakase + Apreciate bartenders - Janice at @jann.kl and Shirmy at @bar.terumi (also featuring Caden, Megan of @highbac.kl and Maria of @penrose.kl). It was nice to see Janice back behind a bar after stepping away from the industry for a few years. She hasn’t lost her touch either - the ingredients on the menu looked a bit strange at first (soy sauce?), but she got all the flavours to meld together just fine. Here’s hoping she’ll be bartending more often again! The shift at Bar Terumi was a different beast altogether - the place was hopping when I got there and the four girls were kept busy all night. Highlights for me were Caden’s honeydew-ish Aviva Fizz and Maria’s Little Black Dress, all made using Chivas Regal 12. Managed to catch the tail-end of the guest shift by Kabir, the Co-Founder & Bar Director of Pantia in Indonesia at Bar Terumi, featuring drinks made with Jura single malt Scotch whisky. Got to try three out of the four cocktails, and my favourite was the Bombay Bobby Burns, made with Jura 12YO, Chai Masala Spice Infused Rosso Vermouth, Benedictine DOM, and Peychaud’s Bitters. The spices added an extra dimension to the drink, but it was the Benedictine that sealed the deal for me. Throwback to last Thursday’s Guest Shoft at @Jann.KL featuring @shaunie.l of @story.of.ono, making some damn tasty drinks with Auchentoshan. Last night’s Campari guest shift at Marini’s on 57 was a real Symphony in Red, in almost senses of the word. Symphony Loo, regional brand ambassador for Campari, was on hand to shake and stir up some great drinks in conjunction with Marini’s On 57’s 10th Anniversary Party. She was kind enough to indulge us with an off-menu Negroni Sbagliato (with Prosecco in it, of course) to begin with, and the drinks on the guest shift menu were also pretty good. My favourite of the night had to be the Espadin's Amber, made with Montelobos Espadin Mezcal, Frangelico, Lychee Liqueur, Citric Solution, Honey, and a top up of Butterfly Pea Tea. It sounds like it has a lot going on, but was actually a perfectly balanced, clean and crisp drink that doesn’t take the spotlight off the Mezcal at all. She also introduced us to a new way to drink Campari - the Campari Shakerato, which is basically Campari wet shaken first then dry shaken to get extra fluffiness, and served as shots. Time for a Chinatown bar hop! Three of Chinatown’s new bars are working together for a special Chinatown Bar Takeover, with each venue’s bartenders taking turns to guest shift at each other’s bars on 22 and 23 June. Head bartenders Kelvin Lee (Her House), Yap Siew Mun (Kapitan Haus) and Haniff Yon (Rust KL) will be serving their own special menus of three drinks each inspired by the food and history of Chinatown. Her House had opened in January, while Kapitan Haus was rebranded as its own bar in May. The newest was Rust KL, opening last month and renovated by just Haniff and his team. Special guest shift at Coley last night, by Jay Khan, the founder of Hong Long’s COA bar, whoch was recently named #1 in the Asia’s 50 Beat Bars 2022 list for the second year in a row. The drinks were arguably the best I’ve had this year.
