Brad Johnson’s Guild Wars 2 Guide Reviewed

My experience with gaming guides is the past has been less than favorable. I’ll go right out and say it: I’ve been scammed by companies making false claims about its guides. I bet that most of the people who wrote these so called “expert guides” never stepped foot in the game. They’re a disgrace. I could find almost all of the worthless information contained in them from a simple Google search engine query. Even the guides that aren’t half bad contain out of date information. MMORPGs are always being patched, and guides need to reflect that in order to stay relevant. That’s why I won’t ever buy a physical guide.

I was hesitant to purchase another guide. After all, I’ve been burnt before, who’s to say it won’t happen again. But because Guild Wars 2 was giving me so much trouble, I decided to see what was out there. After searching long and hard, I found Brad’s blog. He showed screenshots of his character – he was level 80. I didn’t even think it was possible to have a level 80 character in such a short amount of time, but sure enough, Brad Johnson’s accomplishment was legit. He shared a few useful tips in his blog that I incorporated to great success. I wanted more, so I ended up purchasing the guide. 

Turns out that the rumors were true. Brad’s guide is far and away the best guide I have ever owned. After reading just the first section I already knew enough about Guild Wars 2 to get by. How Guild Wars 2 Differentiates Itself Among MMORPGs

The developers of Guild Wars 2 decided that the MMORPG genre of gaming was in need of drastic change. They sought to create a more immersive player experience that would change the way the average user perceived MMOs. To that end they have succeeded. Through its more frenetic combat system, dynamic events and unique approach to skills, Guild Wars 2 is truly breaking the mold, and will be hailed as the much needed evolution for a genre that has become stale. 

Take combat for instance. Instead of standing in place casting spells, players will be allowed to stay mobile while casting most spells, including ones that are channeled. It is this extra mobility that will increase the pace of most traditional PvE battles, and add an extra dynamic to PvP. No longer will players have to completely rely on instant casts to win in the arena.

Also added to the fold is the ability to dodge. Granted, dodging will consume energy and should be reserved for perilous situations, but in those situations a well timed dodge could prove the difference between life and death. 

The questing structure of Guild Wars 2 is perhaps the most revolutionary aspect of the game. Instead of traveling from one NPC to another, performing mundane, seemingly useless tasks along the way, players will be allowed to participate in events. Many of these events require a whole slew of players in order to complete, while others offer substantial rewards. Most importantly, events typically take place on an epic scale and are fun to participate in. 

GW2’s approach to skills feels fresh and unique. A player’s first five skills will vary dependent on what weapon he or she currently has equipped. The sixth slot is a dedicated healing spot. The simple yet brilliant decision to grant each profession a heal slot will serve to break down the traditional Holy Trinity model present in almost every MMO. The 7th through 10th slots are dedicated to Utility and Elite skills, which are based on a player’s racial and profession skills.

Crafting Disciplines in Guild Wars 2

Crafting is an intrinsic aspect of the Guild Wars 2 experience. Although it initially appears to function similarly to other MMO crafting systems, it ends up being significantly deeper and potentially more rewarding. 

There are eight crafting disciplines, many of which will prove familiar to gamers who have played other MMOs. Of these eight disciplines, only two can be active at one time. However, players who have forgone a maxed out discipline for another can easily switch back for a moderate fee. Crafting disciplines are learned from a Master Craftsman. 

Everything from light to heavy armor and metal and magical weapons can be forged via crafting. Materials are earned by either felling enemies, clicking on resource nodes, purchased via vendor or salvaged from scrap. In order to salvage, players must first buy salvage kits. These kits vary in quality, with some granting players a better chance of acquiring upgrades and rare materials than others. 

Crafting also allows players to produce upgrades, which can be used to bolster the stats on gear. For instance, Armorsmiths can craft powerful runes. Upgrading X amount of armor pieces with the same rune will grant players a significant stat boost. The more of the same runes equipped in different armor slots, the bigger the bonus. 

The crafting system employed in Guild Wars 2 assures that reaching the highest crafting level of 400 will not be attainable until players have reached a high character level. New recipes for crafting components will only be earned every 25 levels, and although players can learn high level recipes at an early level, they won’t be able to craft them. This aspect of the game will undoubtedly encourage players to level faster. 

Crafting items also grants experience points. Discovering new recipes increases the base experience earned, as does creating multiple items and critical successes. As with most facets of Guild Wars 2’s gameplay, crafting materials are tiered. There are currently six tiers for each of the main material types. 

Experimenting with new combinations of recipes should prove an enjoyable experience, and one that could prove quite lucrative. Some of the best pieces of gear in Guild Wars 2 can only be forged through crafting.

Guild Wars 2 Achievements System

Guild Wars 2 utilizes a highly structured, comprehensive achievement system. These days gamers expect their favorite titles to come stocked with a myriad of achievements. Adding an extra layer of depth to games, players enjoy the additional replay value achievements afford. Whereas most games only implement uninspired, unrewarding achievements, the Guild Wars 2 achievement system is extraordinarily deep and varied. 

In Guild Wars 2 there are three types of achievements. Daily achievements are similar to traditional daily quests featured in other MMOs like World of Warcraft. Players will be rewarded for killing enemies, slaughtering different enemy types, gathering goods and participating in events. All daily achievements are tiered. Reaching higher tiers requires completing lower tiers first. For instance, by killing 10 enemies players will complete a Tier 1 daily achievement. They must kill 20 more enemies to complete Tier 2. Subsequent tiers grant better rewards. The rewards for completing daily achievements are typically in the form of coin and experience points.

Monthly achievements function in much the same matter as dailies, except that both the requirements and rewards are far greater. For example, completing the Tier 4 Event Participation achievement requires that a player partake in 100 events in a 30-day period. Other achievements reward players based on skill. The Experience Survivor monthly requires players to accumulate increasing amounts of experience without dying. Catering to the hardcore gaming crowd, monthly achievements represent some of the most difficult tasks in the game. 

Monthly achievements are expected to change based on what events are currently going on within the game universe. They are also expected to be somewhat dynamic in nature. 

The third type of achievements is regular achievements. These are more in line with what players have come to expect from MMORPGs. They are broken down into categories. When players enter a zone the loading screen will display their achievement progress. Everything from using weapon skills, to partaking in social events and PvP can potentially grant players an achievement. There are even achievements for sporting special armor. However, the rewards for most regular achievements are only cosmetic in nature.

Thanks to achievements, players who reach level 80 in Guild Wars 2 will still find that there is a lot more to be accomplished.

Guild Wars 2 for Mac: System requirements

Guild Wars 2, the critically acclaimed MMORPG, is now available for Mac users, just a few short weeks after launching on PC.

Currently in beta testing, it's great news for often-overlooked Mac gamers, who normally have to wait months for computer games to make it to their platform, if at all. Of course, those using Parallels Desktop software or with a Bootcamp Windows partition could already play Guild Wars 2, but a Mac-compatible client for the game is far more convenient, and whole-heartedly welcomed.

To pull off the quick Mac turnaround, ArenaNet has partnered with TransGaming to use their Cider technology that dynamically translates content between Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. As a result, the Mac beta is already connected to live game servers, meaning you can jump in and quest with pals straight away, or carry an existing PC Guild Wars 2 account over to the Mac without any fuss.

It also means that future Guild Wars 2 updates will land on Mac and PC simultaneously. However, the developers do stress that it's currently in the beta stages, so expect some quirks and problems while the new system is tested.

"Bringing Guild Wars 2 to the Mac is huge for us, because it introduces the game to an entire group of players who are often ignored by game developers," said the Guild Wars 2 team on their website.

"The ability to play together with your friends is one of the underlying principles of Guild Wars 2, and providing a Mac client means that friends and guildmates can play together regardless of what operating system they favor."

To try out the new client, you'll need to have an activated Guild Wars 2 game code, and then download it from theaccount management page. System requirements are as follows:
