Victory Feast / Dancing the Heads

Kilchapi led his wife up to the verandah & the victory feast. Gongs were sounded, villagers danced offerings were made to ancestors & demons. Gumiloah & Patu followed Kilchapi, carrying the seven heads that were not yet dry in victory dances with all the warriors.

Victorious War Party

Gumiloah & the other village women prepared for the victorious war party to return spreading out new rattan mats on the verandah & inside the longhouse, too. She & her aunts prepared a grand victory feast. The warriors came boisterously in their longboats, led by her seven uncles, Patu & Kilchapi in their war canoes.

River Obstacles

Gumiloah made a brightly colored basket to hold the head of Minyawa, her father’s killer & before Kilchapi set out to avenge his murder she gave him the colorful head-basket then he & the uncles performed a war dance.

Gumiloah Weds Bilautor

Gumiloah had been engaged to a man from outside the surrounding area for many years when Kilchapi returned with her uncle & the boatload of fish he was just in time for their wedding.

Gumiloah Yields

The next day Gumiloah asked every young man if he had seen her sister all denied the intrusion and Kilchapi, bent on making love to Gumiloah caused the sun to wane again to darkness.
