14 October 1918 - Letter to Edith from The Somewhere
This letter begins with Fred noting the arrival of letters and "snaps" from Edith. After some brief commentary on the material he received, he turns to an update on his current situation. In the midst of following the retreating German army, Fred and some of his fellows spent the previous day building a shelter, which involved "[carrying] a double bed for a quarter of a mile" and then building their "shack" around it.
Fred describes a glimpse of the front lines with very few enemy soldiers in sight. He notes that on his journey back to his Battery he happened across a mushroom patch and was able to fill his helmet, though roughly 30 yards away the enemy army had dropped a "5.9" that had "went dud", which Fred mentions with the comment, "We didn't look for any more mushrooms just there!!"
Fred expresses his confidence that peace will come soon - while he is unsure about whether it will arrive before the end of 1918, he writes, "Of this I am sure - 1919 will see peace again in the world." Fred goes on to write of news from his Father, including a successful harvest, and of additional mail which arrived mid-letter, including another "note" from Edith.
