“Grand Blue” has one of the most underrated opening themes for an anime. It somehow captures the essence of the entire show in that it sounds like:

1) The soundtrack to a deep-sea adventure, or at least something you’d hear in a commercial for Hawaii.

2) The soundtrack to spring break in Cancun where a bunch of college students are fucking around and getting drunk.

Iori Kitahara from “Grand Blue” has got to be the most unlucky anime/manga protagonist I’ve encountered in a long while. You know how a LOT of male anime protagonists don’t seem to know what they’re doing when it comes to romance and sex? Either they’re super oblivious (ex.: Tanjiro until the epilogue of “Demon Slayer”) or they just don’t know what they’re doing (ex.: Kazuya from “Rent-a-Girlfriend”). 

When it comes to Iori, he absolutely would love to fool around if he got the chance and he kind of knows what he’s doing. And some of the girls around him, namely Sakurako Busujima, are also open to fooling around with him. So, you’d think that this guy would have better luck than your typical male manga/anime protagonist when it comes to romance, right?

But I swear, the universe does NOT want this man to lose his virginity/find love. For example, in a recent chapter, he was in a situation where he was alone in his room with Busujima and she was doing everything she could to get this guy to sleep with her. She even wore the man’s clothes, for fuck’s sake. So, Iori wants her and Busujima wants him, that’s a recipe for a night of sex. 

Literally, every possible thing that could go wrong happens. His adoptive cousin walks in on him, his sister calls to tell him that their parents are banging in the other room, and his friends poked holes in his condoms. God damn, you can’t even say it was the main character’s fault that nothing happened. It was like the universe itself was holding him back.

Oh, yeah, I’ve been reading a lot of “Grand Blue” recently. It’s pretty funny, not gonna lie.
