I am trying to write a fanfic from the POV an extremely intense top+sadist and I’m unexpectedly having a real hard time with describing the character’s feelings and impressions of themself during the Stuff. I have no trouble getting INTO the character’s POV — it’s just that I’m realizing now that while I’ve marinated for years in stories providing aggregate templates for the wording of sadist-POV of the masochist’s reactions or masochism-POV of either themself or the sadist’s actions, no one seems to have written much about sadist-POV of themself, so my primordial soup of phraseology is surprisingly blank. any tips?

A dream of kimberlites breaching glimmering like swift magmatic salmon.

it's hard for me to think of rhaegar's feelings as redemptive in the circumstances, because it's so unequal... i guess as far as spectrum of emotions in that relationship i'm interested in like, did rhaegar regret what he did to lyanna's life, did he pity her, did he think he was going to be able to make it up to her when he quote unquote won the war? also was lyanna idealistic/passionate about the "cause" of saving the world, did he make a convert of her before the end?

given that we get the flashback to her crying over his song i can see lyanna being really susceptible to this heroic appeal about having to abandon your family for the greatest possible good but i'd like that to be made more material in some way

I don’t think Rhaegar’s feelings for Lyanna can be redemptive in that sense, you know? Because whose feelings for whom justify plunging the world into violent conflict in such a fairly foreseeable way? But I think not ending up being “untouchable” by love the way Barristan suggests (”He was too sad to love” or whatnot) may humanize him, in a nicer and prettier way than than visiting brothels humanized Tywin. It connects him to the rest of the characters, I guess, in a “The Things We Do for Love” kinda way. BUT ... he’s also got this narrative track that’s more parallel to Melisandre, being giftetd or cursed by prophey and then figuring out what to do about it. So maybe he’s not meant to be like the rest of us. (And maybe Ned and Cat are meant to be the more down to earth contrast to that, where he IS human after all and he DID love her after all, etc. And like -- you know, GRRM being the sad nerd who loved the pretty girl but she ended up loving someone else, maybe growing up -- maybe him growing up -- is realizing that Lancelot doesn’t necessarily need to save Guinevere just because it would make Lancelot feel special ... too many tangents ...)

For me it doesn’t fit for Lyanna to really care about the prophecy, it just doesn’t seem to connect to her thematically? But I can see her being attracted to Rhaegar for wanting to fix the Aerys problem. Aerys is a bully and Lyanna’s KOTLT was about standing up to bullies, making things right and just. The prophecy OTOH is just about survival. So that brings me back to the idea of Rhaegar lying to Lyanna for at least a little bit, which is sad, but if you had to in order to save the world ...

AND then we have the problem where a woman must be impregnated to save humanity. AND there’s enough there to think that this is true of Catelyn  w.r.t. birthing Bran as well. So, now that’s a thing to digest.

“too much happiness” and “love of a good women” are two of my favorite collections of hers–story quality can be kind of uneven or like, Puzzlingly Weird, but the good ones are really good! newyorker.com/magazin… i think the new yorker also has a bunch of hers up online
