Ball gown - 1900–1905. If you have been following for a while you'll know I'm under a lot of stress. The opulent era of the late 1800s into the early 1900s brought an affluent clientele to France, preferring the best in French couture. The houses' luxurious offerings of individual, custom pieces made them a prime destination. The evening dress featured here is a wonderful example of the sumptuous pieces offered at this time. Gustave Beer | Reception Dress | c. 1902 ・・・ Gustave Beer was regarded as one of the most expensive dressmakers in Paris. His clients included European royalty, from Empress Frederick of Germany to the Queen of Portugal. Like many of his contemporaries, Beer frequented the Bibliothèque nationale de France for inspiration. He was particularly taken with prints depicting fashions from the time of Louis XVI, which he adapted for modern taste as seen in this example. The bolero on this reception dress is a style Beer introduced in 1902. The short, loose front, a modern variation on the eighteenth-century caraco jacket, sets off a profusion of hand-painted and embroidered lace, a signature feature of the designer. Beer's "Palace of Fashion" was heralded for its innovative stage illuminated by electric lights, which allowed clients to better judge the effect of light on their gowns. Gustave Beer | c. 1919 • • • Through the brilliant surface ornaments and straight silhouette of this dress, people could have foreseen the coming 1920s. The scale pattern or "seigaiha" (blue ocean waves) pattern seen on this dress was used repeatedly in the 1920s as a popular motif of the Art Deco school, whose proponents favored geometric figures. Gustav Beer, born in Germany, opened his fashion house in Paris in 1905. He also established branches at Nice and Monte Carlo. Under his concept of "conservative elegance for conservative clients," he introduced elegant dresses that were luxuriously manufactured down to the finest details. Gustave Beer | c. 1905 • • • This suit, complete with jacket, bodice, skirt and belt, is an excellent example of fashionable day wear from the turn of the century. In 1905 the stylish silhouette was the S-shaped figure with full sleeves fitted at the wrists and relatively full skirts. The subdued dark brown wool of the jacket, skirt, and belt is a satin weave, creating a luxurious finish; the bodice is made from a remarkably modern looking polychrome chiffon silk. The couture house of Beer was one of Paris's prestigious firms from around I900 until World War I. In 1905 Beer moved his business to the place Vendôme. This piece, presumably created during his first year at the new address (as the label attests), is a strong example of the German-born dressmaker's ability to create conservative yet luxurious garments for the fashionable woman. The spiraling surface decoration on the jacket and skirt was clearly influenced by the flowing curves of Art Nouveau. The bodice textile displays elements similar to other contemporary design movements, such as the Wiener Werkstätte.
