Three Unbelieved Tales of New York State Route 206: Story Three
Dad had just signed the paperwork on getting rid of the 1979 Malibu wagon, and we were taking one final dance journey in it. I was driving, after just getting my license recently.
Route 30 and route 206 intersect just west of Margaretville, NY. It was, again, one of those nasty New York winter evenings, with low visibility and slippery roads, and to make matters worse, the wind was gusting really hard that night. Just after getting off of Route 206, the wind caught the large profile of the wagon, sending us approximately 35 MPH sideways along route 30. To make the proper correction, I steered the car to left. It did no good. We were still sliding perpendicular to the guardrails.
With my limited experience, I incorrectly tapped the brake. The car immediately went head first into the guardrail. With our momentum the car did an entire 360 degree turn and came to rest about 4 feet from the guardrail. Had we finally pressed our luck too far?
Both of us were shaken but not hurt. We got out of the car to inspect the damage. There were two areas of damage. The rubber strip around the front license plate mount was scuffed up and the plastic headlight rim around the left headlight was cracked. We toured the rest of the car and found nothing else wrong. We both stood their in disbelief. The only explanation I have to our successful travels, there must have been a higher power riding in the back seat that night.
