Purna Chitrakar, 74, along with the help of his son Rajesh Chitrakar paint finishing touches after making the masks of the 13 deities for the coming Navadurga festival at their home in Bhaktapur, Nepal on Wednesday, October 14, 2020. Rajesh Chitrakar says his father did not have enough money to buy a board to write with chalk for school, therefore he started painting when he was 15. Last year the municipality, Guthi Sansthan and the religious committee provided them a total of Rs200,000 to make the masks but had to bear the rest of the expense on their own which cost an approximate Rs300,000-350,000. “Every year since my father started the work we have always been receiving less and this year as the COVID-19 pandemic looms we are still uncertain whether the amount will stay the same or even lesser," says Rajesh.
