Theory: Wallis Left His Hat At The Ruins

Hooo boy, this is gonna be a pretty long post

Okay so has anyone noticed how we haven't seen Wallis’s hat since THIS?

Now I first dismissed this as the hat design clashing with his outfit change in later chapters (hard to find a tailor in the middle of ancient ruins/the ocean), but what if it’s more than that?

After all, CQ is known to deliver shattering character revelations at the drop of a hat

So while we know it’s not entirely impossible, it’s still a long shot from “plausible.” What’s to say he didn’t just stick it in a bag after getting back to camp? 

Well since there isn’t a ton of physical evidence to go off, it’s time to move to character! Why would he do something like that? And, on top of that, not tell anyone about it?!

It’s probably best to start by examining his relationship with his own magic.

When talking with Rylie, he confesses that he can ONLY make wormholes, something CQ later clarified as the only thing he is confident in controlling.

Wallis doesn’t trust his magic- ever since Harold’s limbs disappeared, he’s been afraid of what he’s capable of. He goes through immense effort to make sure he never hurts anyone again.

Rylie even complains about never actually seeing him do tricks during practices! 

Because as long as he’s careful, as long as he keeps his magic to himself, as long as he only does what he knows will work? He won’t hurt the people he cares about.

Enter: The Vanishing Act

This is where it all goes wrong. There’s a terrorist attacking his show, his mom is hurt, and something needs to be done fast. 

And instead of using his magic to save the day, what happens? He floats off the ground, nearly suffocates his best friend, and vanishes into thin air. Any illusion that Wallis had built up over the years that he might be able to keep his magic under control as long as he just tries? That he could keep people safe? It’s gone after he finds himself in the middle of the ruins two weeks later with his entire career ripped to shreds. 

And despite his conversation with Rylie? I think he still blames himself. 

After all that, what are his options? He can’t just leave his family- he cares about them and they’ve made it clear that wouldn’t be tolerated no matter how much of a risk he thinks he might be. 

But he can’t hurt them again either. 

So why not get rid of the problem altogether?

TLDR; The events of the magic show left Wallis’s distrust of his own magic so high, he decided to get rid of it altogether so he wouldn’t hurt anyone.

I think the Lemonkids are much more tied to Amadeus than Harold. If they were originally created by a magician, it would most likely have been by him. They’re even shown to be able to shapeshift- an ability Petunia implied Amadeus has. So I have my suspicions the Lemonkids we know and love aren’t even in their original/true forms!

They’re also waaaay more autonomous than any golem we’ve seen so far, though they still ultimately follow commands from Amadeus. They have their own opinions and emotions, meaning they’re able to take actions outside of those commands. This leads me to believe they are sentient, so yeah! Unless Amadeus’s magic is constantly needed to hold them together (because again, we don’t know what they’re truly made of), they’d hopefully be fine
