Anyway, Merlin as a ruler, on top of being a prophet (at least before he went crazy). Ignoring some historical weirdness for the sake of fun, it could make for an amusing story of Merlin running his own petty kingdom separate from all the shenanigans at Camelot.

EDIT: Oh, and we also can't forget Merlin being a married man. It's kinda sad how Merlin ended it ngl:

         they hadn’t had much time as husband and wife, not much time even to get to know each other. before they’d married, there had been war. after they’d married, there was still a war to wrap up. it was over now, though, the last challengers to the crown subdued. now, he stood in front of his wife, nearly a stranger to him, and grasped for the words that might bridge the gap. ‘ i’m home. ‘ oh, good job, arthur. that really makes women weak in the knees, doesn’t it?

            they hadn’t heard from lancelot in months. he’d departed to rescue guienvere, to bring her sister home. when gwenhwyfach had gotten word of the kidnapping, she’d come to camelot. she just wanted to know her sister was alright. she’d continued to help organize the city’s healers, though she didn’t have the same gifts guinevere did. that was what she was doing when the messenger came. sir lancelot has returned, and the queen is with him. she’d run so fast it was as if her feet didn’t even hit the floor. arthur and lancelot were speaking outside the door of the queen’s chambers, but gwenhwyfach brushed past them, through the doors and to her sister. ‘ you’re alright! ‘ she breathed, wrapping her arms around guinevere. ‘ i thought-- ‘ she’d began to think that she’d never see guinevere again. ‘ but you’re alright. are you hurt? i can fetch a healer. ‘

          when mark had told her they would need to travel to camelot, to celebrate the high king’s marriage, to welcome the new high queen, she hadn’t been thrilled. and then they’d arrived, and people were already whispering about arthur’s new wife. rumors that she was a witch, others saying she was a healer. suddenly, isolde was excited she had come. when she saw the queen standing on her own, she approached, not waiting for mark to make an introduction. she did bow, though. ‘ your majesty, there are those who say you are a healing. i was wondering if they were correct. ‘

         this woman. she was going to be the end of him. arthur had named him the queen’s knight, placing guinevere’s safety in his hands. he’d tried to explain to arthur that he wasn’t the right choice, that perhaps gawain would be better suited. or kay! anyone but him. there was a reason, after all, that lancelot kept leaving camelot for this quest or that mission. being too long near guinevere was too difficult. ‘ your majesty, i think it would be better if you selected a different knight as your champion. ‘

           never had he been more grateful for his fae-heritage. the guards had never seen him, meliagant hadn’t expected him. he’d been so tempted to kill the villain, let him choke on his own blood for daring to harm the queen. instead, lancelot had tied him up, made sure he knew that someone would be sent to collect him, and then knocked him unconscious. he was trying to be a better person. finding guinevere had been easy after that. meliangant made her to keep her close, and lancelot found her sleeping in the room beside meliagant’s. he crept into the room silently, and when he was beside her bed he knelt there, covering her mouth with one hand and placing one finger to his lips. ‘ guinevere. don’t scream. its lancelot. i’ve come to take you home. ‘
