I recently moved to the Seattle area and learned you live close too. Any tips for an artist living in Seattle-ish? Any art stores that I should visit as well?

Welcome to the land of disturbing amounts of coffee shops, rain and bad drivers!  I’m not sure how helpful I can be since attempting to be freelance/indie means very little social life and free time.  What little I have is usually with indie game people, but I can suggest a few things. 

If you’re looking for a place to hang out with artists and get some good figure drawing practice check out Gage Academy of Art.  They offer many figure drawing sessions and classes to the public.  They are even starting a drink and draw.  There are fees, though.  There’s always cafe drawing.  Chances are pretty good if you spend enough time in a decent coffee shop that doesn’t chase out people for staying too long that you’ll meet other local artists.  The Starbucks outside of Northgate Mall is a good starting point. 

A good thing to do is to go to some of the local conventions and talk to some of the many local artists that get tables there.  Emerald City Comic Con is a great one (which is this weekend and unfortunately sold out.  I’m not even going this year :( ).  Sakura Con is also suppose to be good ( I haven’t been).  Essentially you’ll need to put in some networking elbow-grease to find an ‘in’ to a group.  The groups kind of revolve around where you work, or your college, but they are far from exclusive.

As for stores- there’s a Dick Blicks with the Jimi Hendrix statue outside that is essentially a one-stop shop for art supplies.  There’s also the competing Daniel Smith at various locations surrounding Seattle.  Keep an eye out for sales by getting their mailing lists.  That’s kind of the only time they’ll be a cheaper option than local giant Amazon.  Still, I prefer to get things like gesso board in person.
