I wanna write something insane crazy. Like. Gross. Really perverted…..
Kyouka shot Atsushi a quizzical glance before Atsushi continued. "You say we need to eliminate him, but... it doesn't even matter how evil he is. There's no reason to kill him. We just need to capture him." Atsushi racked his brain for a solution in an attempt to escape from his own fears. Eventually, the image of a sand-colored overcoat popped into his head, reminding him of the man he owed everything to. "That's it!" Atsushi looked to Kyouka. "I'll bet Dazai will know what to do. We just need to save him." He mumbled to himself in an act of desperation, trying to convince himself of those words: "Yeah. Dazai has to know what to do. Once we save him, he'll..." "..." But Kyouka didn't respond, and Atsushi never even noticed the ice-cold look in her eyes.
there's so much in this little tiny exchange. the fact that Atsushi still has faith in Dazai when everyone else is already losing hope in him the moment its mentioned he's in Mukurotoride with Shibusawa. The fact that Atsushi thinks there's a deathless way out of this when he still doesn't know he's killed Shibusawa before. The cold look Kyoka has, reminding once again that she was with the Mafia before. She's undoubtedly heard of Dazai's legacy from the source. She knows.
In a way the entirety of the BSD main series, but very pointedly in Dead Apple, is taking a relatively idealist black-and-white thinking Atsushi and pulling him through situations that challenge his morals time and time again. The man who saves him was once one of the most ruthless members of the mafia. He gets pulled into this world, the ADA, that exists right on the balance between. He sees his coworkers, the good guys, slip into something scary time and time again. Tanizaki strangling Higuchi in the alleyway early on comes to mind. Kyoka, innocent tween who loves rabbits and crepes and is an ex-mafia assassin.
And then he's paralleled to Akutagawa. Who's so black and white but in a completely different way. Someone who was mentored by the same man in a completely different time. Christ the symbolism of them both having black/white solid hair with little parts of the other. Its been said a million times but they're really perfect foils. The way morality and what's "good" and "bad" and how you're forced to confront it time and time again in this goddamn series will always get to me. Its walking you through black-and-white thinking and showing you the exceptions, the slip-ups, the way people can change for better or worse and how no one person or thing will always fully be one or the other. Gah
