With the NewYear right around the corner there will be the usual flood of people starting their New Years resolution by joining a gym on a quest to lose that stubborn belly fat they have accumulated over the last year. For some it is the first time they have joined a gym in their whole life. It can be very intimidating and confusing with all of the new equipment that is available. One may feel completely overwhelmed walking in the first time trying to get a workout. The natural tendency is to hop on the almighty treadmill and hit start!! This can be done in your neighborhood. It is important to get the most out of your gym membership because you are paying good money for it. Learning how to use new cardio machines, free weights, machines, and group exercise is important to your overall experience which will keep you engaged and more likely to keep up with your exercise routine. GET INVOLVED! There is a learning curve to overcome but you will be glad you put forth the effort. So let's take you through some things to ask and watch for if you are joining a gym for the first time. First, I would look for the most convenient locations within a 5-10 mile radius of your house or your work. This is important because the last thing anyone wants is a 20-30 minute drive to the gym. That is the first excuse you want to squash. The times that the gym is open is important as well. Unless you work crazy hours then almost any gym will work because if they are not 24 hrs then they usually stay open at least until 9 or 10pm and open early in the morning. Once you have your locations picked out it is time to call them up and set up an appointment for a tour. When you show up for your appointment go ahead and be upfront with the sales person and tell them that you are shopping around for a gym and that you will not be joining today. On the other hand, while you are getting the tour if you just feel in your gut that you have found the right place then by all means go ahead and join. Make sure you get a good overview of the entire facility. Know what you are buying and getting involved with. The purpose of this is to get a good idea of the atmosphere and the type of clientele the gym is attracting. Every gym has its own DNA. It's own sense of community. You want to be able to mesh in with that community. Pay attention to the staff. This is important. Your want staff who are friendly and approachable. Ask them if there is someone who can help you go over the basics of how to use the equipment. Ask them if they have any kind of group classes. You are trying to find out what you can get involved with. The final step in the process is price. This is really dependent on your budget and what kind of value you feel like the gym is offering. By value, I am talking about the quality of the service you receive, the quality of the equipment, cleanliness, friendliness of the staff, and extra amenities. If you are only worried about price then you will probably get what you pay for. Time to sign up!!! Most gyms nowadays only accept a bank/credit/debit draft every month for your membership. So if you are someone who doesn't not like to have something debited from your account then ask if there is a month to month cash option. You will be paying for your first month dues and a initiation fee. The initiation fee is always more than your monthly dues but it is part of the process. You will more than likely pay more this way if they offer it as an option. You are going to be signing some kind of liability waiver and a contract agreement for your membership. Sometimes gyms will try and offer an upswell at the point of sale. An upswell can mean a group exercise membership, a small package of personal training, locker rentals, supplements, and other amenities. Use your best judgement on these. Don't overwhelm yourself with a ton of things to keep track of. Keep it simple at the beginning. Make sure you understand the terms of your contract before singing. Know what the cancellation policy is and if there are any hidden fees that will come up at a later date. You are officially a gym member!! Congratulations!! Now what!!?? Get involved! First thing I would is find out which group exercise class you would like to try. Sometimes they are included with your membership and sometimes they are extra. Start with the beginner class and go for it!! Group classes are such a great way to start. Everyone is working together and you have a teacher motivating everybody to push themselves. You make some new connections with other members and now have a sense of community. After you have become comfortable with the group exercise classes and the overall layout of the gym I highly recommend getting set up with a personal trainer. Personal training is not cheap but again it is crucial to getting involved and learning new skills. Most gyms offer a free consultation with one of their trainers. This first meeting you are going to be asked some questions about your goals, your diet, your previous workout experience. Sometimes you may even get your weight, bodyfat, and BMI calculated for you. Tell the trainer you are wanting to learn how to use the machine equipment. I wouldn't worry about free weights just yet. I recommend 2-3 sessions with a personal trainer to get used to the mechanics of all of the machines and how many reps/sets to do on each one and how many times a week. Once you feel competent with the machines I would recommend getting another 2-3 sessions with your trainer to start learning free weight techniques. Free weights are king when it comes to muscular strength. Maintaining muscularity is vital to your metabolism and overall health. At this point you have really dived into the pulse of your gym. You may be thinking that this is a lot of work and costly but in order to make something higher on your priority list you have to get some skin in the game!! Your health is the greatest investment you can make in your life. Take it seriously. It is never to late to start. I hope this helps you feel more comfortable with the gym joining process. You know how to start looking, what to do once you have a list of gyms, what to expect when you go in for your appointment, what to expect when you join, what to do when you join, and how to get the best experience possible.
