The annual samurai parade to celebrate the foundation of Matsue town and castle was held last Saturday, April 4th. With heavy rain and strong winds in the days running up to the parade, it was unclear as to whether things could be held as planned, or if they would have to be transferred to an indoor venue. Luckily though, the rain held off, and a bit of sun even peeked out from behind the clouds from time to time!
There were approximately 240 participants in this year’s event, with men, women, and children filling the various roles of persons over 400 years ago, when the castle was completed.
Local media and camera enthusiasts were among those who turned out to see the colourful display.
The parade wound its way from Tenjin Rotary (close to Matsue JR Station), across the river that divides the town into north and south, and finally reached the castle area.
As a close to the parade, the feudal lord, Horio Yoshiharu gave a few words of thanks, and a call of celebration commemorating the completion of Matsue castle.
This was followed by rifle shooting displays.
And as this time of year coincides with the cherry blossoms, it is also a good chance (weather permitting!) to enjoy the blossoms at their best ^-^
Here are some more shots of the parade as it drew closer to the castle area. If you’re interested in this kind of historical re-enactment, mark your diary for the first Saturday of April, and start making plans to make your way to Matsue!
