hey! if you liked eleanor & park back when u were in middle school/in high school/a lot younger and are excited about the movie i’m begging u to take a look at the criticism about it. it’s an incredibly racist book and the fact that it has a movie coming out soon disgusts me. i liked it when i read it back in elementary school but after seeing snippets of it, i realized just how terrible it is. there’s no shame in changing your opinion on things!! check out my eleanor and park tag for more info or literally just google it there’s lots of reviews, articles and posts. PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT THE MOVIE!

every time rick does something i get more pissed off bc i know most people will continue to support him and like not acknowledge his flaws....they’re like “he’s better than jk r*wling” OKAY BUT THAT DOESN’T MEAN GOOD!!! IF YOU THINK RICK IS “THE BEST AUTHOR OUT THERE” AND “THE MOST DIVERSE” I AM BEGGING YOU TO DO SOME RESEARCH ABOUT THE THINGS HE’S SAID AND DONE. YOU DON’T EVEN HAVE TO DISLIKE HIM, JUST BE ABLE TO SEE THE FLAWS IN HIS BOOKS.

ok im literally just rambling but like when people say sadie’s “white passing” and therefore cannot be drawn with Not Pale Skin and Not Straight Blonde Hair,,,,like literally she was not described as blonde. She was not described as pale. She was not described with straight hair. All that was said was that she’s “lighter than Carter” and “takes after her mother”. And one thing I think people don’t understand about being mixed is like...everyone perceives you differently. I’m half east asian n half white and I consider myself to be white passing. I live in a predominantly asian area and I’m usually perceived as white. But when talking to my friends from predominantly white areas, or visiting my relatives in small predominantly white towns, they perceive me as a poc. Obviously it’s not the same for every mixed race person but it’s something to think about. Everyone in the story probably perceived her differently. And that affected the way she was described

tl;dr stop whitewashing sadie and trying to justify it

one thing i think we need to acknowledge is that simply having “diverse” characters doesn’t mean it’s good representation. ive seen posts where someone is like oh look at all the different sexualities and ethnicities this author includes and lists a bunch of their characters. it’s just praising them for doing the bare minimum. especially if their “diverse” characters are written terribly, which often times they are!!

idk how to articulate this but like,,,authors will do this thing where they have a mixed race character who’s half white and just. only focus on their white side. their other side will just be brought up like as an off hand remark or if their parent shows up or something. and it’s just? really harmful to imply mixed people arent connected to their culture(s) or that only our white half matters?? anyways.

your first reaction when seeing criticism of media u enjoy shouldn’t be “omg stop cancelling everything”. it should be reading what people have to say !! how can you praise an author for their diversity while silencing the voices they’re trying to uplift????????
