Untrammelled Womanhood
Théâtre de l'Opéra / 1er Grand Bal Masqué (1898). H. GRAY (Henri Boulanger, French, 1858-1924). Poster. Printer: Imp. Courmont Frères, Paris.
If ever there was something that could top the magnificence and opulence of the Òpera Garnier, it was surely the Grand Bal Masqué at the Òpera Garnier, held once a month from January to March. This one, the first of the 1898 season, was to celebrate the inauguration of the Grand Cascade at the Bois de Boulogne, a tremendous, romantic waterfall in the middle of the park. Streamers fly from the box seats and an enormous backdrop of the cataract floods out to a sea of gowns and top hats.
