They both rose to the top separate from each other, propulsed by their talent but also by nature (Arasha) or nurture (Damien), feeling pressure from different sources (social vs parental). Damien is pushed, Arasha pushes herself, sometimes to her own detriment. Damien is lonely at the top but that's all he knows, he never learned to lay down the sword, and Arasha climbed to the top with horse blinders and once she's there she cannot relax because she cannot let herself fall. And then they meet each other.
