Habsfan98 Opinion: Is the “Price” Right? For Carey’s Extension
Guy’s... I know I’m going to get a lot of flack from the habs community for this one thing. Yet, I have to say this because someone has to look at the other side here.
Today the Montreal Canadiens announced the Carey Price has been signed to a contract extension. An 8-year 84 million dollar contract. That will begin in 2018-2019, through 201-2026.
At first this is a major deal for the Canadiens. Price for many in the hockey community is the best goaltender in the world. Hell, at his best, he’s considered one of the best hockey players in the world.
But, I have a big problem with this contract. Its not the length, but the cap hit. Price will earn $10.5 million per year. That’s a big chunk of the teams salary cap. To which will be set at $76 million dollars next season.
Now, I for one think Price more than desevers this contract. With the way that he’s put the team on his back for most of the recent seasons for the habs. He deserves, a big pay day.
Yet, This is it. Can the habs the way they are win? The team, has gone through a bit of a make over in the last year. Being in a more veteran defensive core. While looking to bring in more skill and this years on the forward depth.
Yet, my fear is that this contract will strong arm the Canadiens.
Like, I know that Price, even when he’s not his best. Is still a solid goaltender; and can easily steal games for the habs on a consistent bases.
Yet, can he keep this up for eight more years? Price is 29 years old, and some might say that he’s in his prime already.
However, I look at this contract will be either to things for Price. He’ll either be the next Martin Brodeur, who will have a length career with the same organization, win consistently, and possibly take the habs to a Stanley cup Championship.
Or. Price will turn into the next Roberto Luongo. Same consistent play, which will be elevated in his prime; but will drop off. He’ll still play at an efficient level at the number one role. But as his game dips, a younger cheaper player will start to take over. Eventually resulting in a trade, that if I’m very honest. Could never be made with a contender.
Now, I could be very wrong here. Carey Price could be neither of these scenarios. For all I know, he could create his own story, and solid career.
But, I just wanted to get this out there. This contract could be a good for the habs, or be the next horror story of a contract gone wrong; for the NHL history books.
ME @ Habs right now.
I like how all the habs fan switched to watching the Nashville vs. Chicago. They want to see the showstopper that was PK Subban move on with his new team.
Remember when the Habs traded Subban for Weber. To both improve the team and bring better character to the locker room?
