Directed by Women Timeline Expansion Extravaganza - going on all day today... until midnight EDT...
Join me on Monday (Labor Day in the USA) for a 12 hour online information expansion marathon! It's going to be FUN ...
There's more to #DirectedbyWomen Worldwide Film Viewing Party than watching movies. This is also a time for us to help film lovers discover and explore the work of women directors new to them.
I've been gathering information about women who have directed film (and by that I mean any form of motion picture). The list currently has 9357 directors and is growing all the time.

Recently I have implemented new #DirectedbyWomen Timelines that help show off the work of women directors in what I hope is an engaging, interactive environment.
A few examples of timelines:
Agnès Varda:
http://directedbywomen.com/en/timeline.html?id=nm0889513
Ava DuVernay:
http://directedbywomen.com/en/timeline.html?id=nm1148550
Rachel Talalay:
http://directedbywomen.com/en/timeline.html?id=nm0003080
It would be great to have a robust timeline for every woman who has directed film.
That's where this marathon comes in. There's so much more information out there than one person can gather. So I'm inviting film lovers/makers to dive in and help expand the content.
You're invited to take a few minutes or a few hours to help make a difference.
Ways you can participate:
1) Search http://directedbywomen.com/en/directedby.html and use this form - http://ow.ly/OeCOh - to expand information about women directors. Share social media links and contribute links for interviews, podcasts, Q&As, profile pieces and other content that might become part of the directors timelines. Througout the day I'll be checking for your contributions and incorporating the content into the website as fast as I can!
2) The filmographies in the timelines are drawn fromhttp://themoviedb.org/ (TMDb). [Note: this is different from IMDb. TMDb has an API that is legal for people to use, so it's incredibly valuable... plus it is MUCH easier to edit than IMDb!] So let's expand information about women directors in TMDb. It's pretty easy....
Go to TMDb. Sign up (free). Log in. Add information about directors and their directing credits. Let's see if we can get profile images, film posters, stills, youtube videos, descriptions, etc. listed in TMDB for as many women directors and their work as we possibly can. This information feeds tens of thousands of film related websites so it's a powerful way to disseminate information about women directors throughout the global film community. Letterboxd is just one example of a site that populates its content from TMDb.
TMDb help page: https://www.themoviedb.org/documentation/editing
Don't forget to send me links so I can be sure to connect the data to the #DirectedbyWomen list.
3) Share the timelines with friends to invite them to explore the work of directors you value.
4) If you want to get really engaged in this process, reach out to me. I would value your support. It's really engrossing work. I think you'll find it amazing once you dive in. I have!
....
Not specifically TIMELINE related but something else you can do at TMDb...
Tag films #DirectedbyWomen with the keyword 'woman director' - that will make them available in the Film Viewing Possibilities pages:
http://directedbywomen.com/en/filmsbyyear.html
http://directedbywomen.com/en/filmsbygenre.html
... and make that information available to the tens of thousands of other websites and film lovers who access TMDb for film information!
Currently we have 8658 #DirectedbyWomen Film Viewing Possibilities tagged. You can see there's a lot more out there to include.
....
OK... so I will be spending roughly 12 hours working on this. I have info about hundreds of women directors in my backlog. And I'm always finding more. So there's a lot to do.
Hope you'll engage. We can make a big difference... and have fun sharing knowledge.
