thought dump on Hacks S5E3 — SPOILER WARNING
note: I really really love hacks with all my heart, so this isn’t coming from a place of being negative for the sake of it. This season has just been rubbing me the wrong way and I’d hate for the show to end on such a note.
- the obligatory random meaningless throwaway romance plot with zero chemistry for Ava that probably gets dropped later like we get every season
- another young guy for Deborah as love interest with undertones of “he’s attracted to her because he has parent issues”
- giving a ship name to them that is suspiciously similar to “avorah”
- Somehow there’s always this implication that age gap between younger man/older woman is fine and “hot” but then basically telling us that age gap younger woman/older woman is unrealistic and unacceptable
- Deborah being “in the closet” as a literal line
- Deborah acting completely ooc about that guy and acting all “girly besties” with Ava about it in a way that just feels extremely forced
- Deborah acting all ooc about the “breakup” as well
- This whole magic vs sex work thing… they probably tried to do something there but they failed. It was just ridiculous.
- ava using the word “housemate” instead of “roommate” in the context of this season feels like wanting to avoid the queer associations of the latter word
- reheating the Deborah x Marty thing for the umpteenth time? Seriously? At least she said no. Sort of.
- It feels quite directionless so far. The show is like a caricature of itself right now.
This season is just utter disrespect for the fandom and especially the part of the fandom that has carried the show’s success and it’s not even subtle about it. I’m seriously considering not continuing to watch this season because I don’t want it to spoil my good memories of this show. I love Hacks so much, it’s been one of my absolute favourite shows of all time otherwise I wouldn’t bother criticising it but I’m really disappointed here. There’s not giving us the avorah ending we want, fair enough, and then there’s deliberately spiting us.
I still hope they’ll turn it around somehow and we’ll laugh about this at the end but right now I’m just… what the fuck.
