Wakeskating at a Heritage Site
Banaue Rice Terraces is a proclaimed UNESCO World Heritage Site. A prestigious award indeed. It has been included in the Eight Wonders of the World. Hagdan Hagdan Palayan is now placed on the list of World Heritage in Danger in 2001 and it remains there today due to diverse changes.
A video became viral about wakeskating in this famous Rice Terraces. Professional wakeskaters Brian Grubb of the United States and Dominik Preisner of Germany are the ones in the video. Wakeskating is similar to the popular water sport wakeboarding, but users are not bound to the board.
I don't know if this is a good sign. From the point of view of UNESCO, it is not. It's essence of having been included in the World Heritage Site is being exploited.
The team defended the said activity by attaching a statement saying, "Respect for the environment was a priority from the beginning of this project!" Further, "The team has assured that the plants and wildlife have neither been damaged nor disturbed at any time during the project. And, "All agreements have been made together with the locals and under respect of their traditions and culture."
